A Journey Continues

After two remarkable voyages – a solo adventure across the Atlantic, North Sea, and Baltic Sea, and a challenging navigation around Italy as well as some racing in China, I stand at the helm of a new chapter. Aboard the "Jolie Fleur," our beautifully classic yet modern 30-foot cruiser, I am planning to embark on an exploration of Albania and Greece's captivating waters.

Jolie Fleur: A Vessel of Dreams

The "Jolie Fleur" is not just a boat; it's a testament to the robustness and reliability required for the capricious seas. This cruiser, with its blend of classic elegance and modern functionality, is perfectly suited for the varied conditions of the Mediterranean. It is currently located in Italy near Lignano, from where we embark on cruises on the northern Adriatic Sea.

Past Voyages

My previous journeys have been both teacher and muse. From battling storms at the North Sea to challenging conditions in the Strait of Messina to the serene nights under the stars in the Aeolian Islands, each mile has enriched my sailing wisdom. These experiences have not only honed my skills but also deepened my respect for the sea's unpredictable nature.

In the spring of 2014, I embarked on a sailing journey that would not only test my skills as a sailor but also transform my understanding of adventure and solitude. Aboard my trusty Hanse 370, the Fleur d’Océan, I set sail for a voyage that spanned 4358 miles, 9 countries, and 67 stages, all solo.

The Genesis of a Dream

The seed of this journey was planted decades ago, a dream often shelved amidst the demands of everyday life. However, in 2010, I made a decisive choice: a sabbatical from my routine. This wasn't just a break; it was a dive into the depths of my long-held aspiration.

Turning Dreams into Plans

Preparation was as much a part of this journey as the journey itself. I bought the Fleur d’Océan and meticulously planned every detail, from routes to supplies. I even attained the necessary sailing certifications, leaving nothing to chance.

The Voyage

My route was a labyrinth of nature's wonders: from Hendaye on the Spanish-French border, through the treacherous waters of the Bay of Biscay, along the English Channel, and then the serene yet challenging North Sea. The Baltic Sea welcomed me with its unique blend of calm and challenge.

Nature was my constant companion, displaying its myriad moods. I navigated through storms, relished in the tranquil days, and admired the wildlife – from playful dolphins to majestic puffins.

Challenges and Triumphs

Solo sailing is a dialogue with solitude. It teaches resilience, demands ingenuity, and offers unparalleled introspection. There were moments of sheer joy, nights filled with deep reflection, and times when my resolve was tested.

The End or Just the Beginning?

After 128 days, I arrived in Laboe, a person transformed. This journey wasn't just about nautical miles covered; it was about discovering uncharted territories within myself.

"A Cruiser's Foray into Racing: Lessons from the China Cup"

The world of sailing is vast and varied, with cruising at one end and racing at the other. As someone whose heart lies in cruising, exploring tranquil waters and discovering hidden gems, participating in the China Cup 2017 was a venture into unfamiliar waters. But as I've learned, racing hones skills in a way that cruising can't always provide.

The Call of the Race

The China Cup, China's largest regatta, was a departure from my usual sailing adventures. Accustomed to setting my own pace and course, the competitive and fast-paced environment of racing was both exhilarating and daunting. Joining as a skipper with the "Big Mountain" team, whom I had sailed with in 2015, was an opportunity I couldn't pass up.

Training Day Challenges

Our team was a mix of seasoned sailors and newcomers, with just a half-day's training under our belt. The first race from Hong Kong to Shenzhen was a real test of our collective skills, especially with the light wind conditions. We were a spontaneous assembly, learning to synchronize our efforts and strategies on the fly.

Navigating Through Competition

In-port races around Shenzhen Daya Beach were short but intense, requiring sharp tactics and seamless teamwork. These races were a stark contrast to my usual cruising experiences, demanding quick decisions and constant adjustments. The experience was a valuable lesson in adaptability and precision.

A Cruiser's Perspective on Racing

What struck me most was the difference in mindset between cruising and racing. Cruising is about the journey, the scenery, and the serenity of the sea. Racing, on the other hand, is about speed, strategy, and pushing limits. Yet, both share a common love for the sea and the joy of sailing.

The Unexpected Triumph

Perhaps the most fulfilling moment came during the race around the small islands. Here, our endurance, skill, and strategy were put to the test. Battling strong winds and witnessing professional teams at their best was exhilarating. Securing a fifth-place finish was a moment of pride and a testament to our team's potential.

Concluding Thoughts

Participating in the China Cup 2017 was a detour from my cruising passion, but it was a journey worth taking. Racing has sharpened my skills, taught me the value of teamwork, and given me a new appreciation for the diverse world of sailing. It's a reminder that no matter the form, the essence of sailing remains the same – a deep connection with the sea and a relentless pursuit of horizons.

An Unexpected Beginning

My journey, meant to be a straightforward sail, took a turn even before I set foot on my boat, the Fleur Rapide. A motorcycle accident just a day before departure was the first of many unexpected events. Yet, with determination, I began my voyage in mid-May from Italy, heading towards the Adriatic charms of Croatia.

Navigating Challenges

With a non-functional autopilot, steering the Fleur Rapide was a test of skill and patience. The early part of the trip was marked by unpredictable weather – cold, rainy days with persistent headwinds. These conditions weren't just meteorological challenges; they were lessons in resilience.

Companionship and Scenery

In Split, Croatia, my partner Beatrice joined me, bringing warmth to the journey. Together, we sailed to Dubrovnik, enjoying the Croatian coastline's enchanting bays, delightful cuisine, and friendly locals. This leg of the journey was a blend of romantic escapades and adventurous sailing.

Montenegro and Beyond

Montenegro's landscape, where mountains and sea converge, was a spectacle of natural grandeur. However, with favorable winds, I made a strategic decision to skip Albania, setting course for Italy's southern tip. The journey took me through the iconic Strait of Messina, a challenging stretch with strong winds and towering waves.

A Mythical Encounter

Sailing past the Aeolian Islands, particularly Stromboli, was akin to stepping into a mythical realm. The nighttime eruptions of Stromboli were a spectacle that connected me to the ancient mariners and their tales.

The Journey North

Time constraints led me to alter my route towards Pisa. This final stretch wasn't without its trials – stormy weather and tumultuous seas provided a fitting climax to an already eventful voyage.

Reflections and Insights

Covering 1603 nautical miles in 397 hours was a testament to both the Fleur Rapide's capabilities and my own as a sailor. The journey, with its various moorings and the challenge of the fastest and longest leg from Montenegro to Italy, was a blend of endurance and exhilaration.
