A passion for puzzles

A passion for puzzles

I love puzzles but I'm kind of particular. I like some word puzzles, but not the mammoth daily crossword type. I really enjoy jigsaw puzzles, but my sweet spot seems to be 500-600 pieces. I guess I enjoy the idea of dovetailing a bit of puzzling into my daily and weekly routine, quite analogous to how I fit puzzle pieces together into images, or letters into words.

The companion photo image to this article is a jigsaw puzzle of a mandala, which I selected for the interplay of colors and shapes that make up the whole. I thought it would be fun (versus frustrating) to solve, because of the intricate patterns, multiple colors, and intersecting shapes.

There is a satisfaction, certainly, in solving an entire puzzle. But what I seem to find as enjoyable as the solution is all of the incremental wins leading up to the final solution. I also enjoy puzzles as an activity to clear my head of other thoughts, and the "break" ends up energizing me to return to tasks that need to get completed.

Any guesses as to how long I worked on the pictured jigsaw puzzle?

  • Hint # 1: I laid it out in one room of our house but eventually moved it to another room before guests arrived.
  • Hint #2: The elapsed time from start to finish was less than a calendar year

Do you have a passion for a particular type of puzzle or game? Please share in the comments, along with your guess of the time it took me to solve the mandala jigsaw puzzle. #puzzles #pasttimes #games

I'm going to guess it took you 5 months. I like puzzles, too, but haven't had time to do one this last year. I've done the Wordle every day for the last 572 days, though. I also do the mini crossword, spelling bee and connections games from the same site.

I love putting puzzles together too. It’s a tradition we do during our summer vacation down the shore. Put it out on a table and everyone works on it during our stay.
