Passion and Purpose: Jeff Hiott’s Calling in Transportation
Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA)
They say what's meant for you will always find its way to you. At least that was the case with Jeff Hiott, who once considered becoming a high school math teacher.
But something just didn’t feel right.
Born in Charleston, South Carolina, Hiott's passion for transportation began during childhood visits to New York City and Atlanta, where public transportation fascinated him.
“That kind of ignited it,” said Hiott, now Senior Vice President of Operational Transformation at Metro. “I have always been drawn to transit. It’s hard to put a finger on it. It's just something that I really appreciate for what it is and what it does for the community.”
Hiott pursued a degree in Civil Engineering with a focus on transportation at Georgia Tech.
“I knew at some point I was going to have a career in transit,” he said.
And he was right.
Hiott spent 14 years at the American Public Transportation Association (APTA), leading their Technical Services and Innovation Department. He later moved to CapMetro in Austin, Texas, as the Vice President of Enterprise Program Management, overseeing performance, asset management, and zero-emission vehicle programs.
In April 2023, Hiott joined Metro as the Senior Vice President of Bus Transformation, and by May 2024, his role expanded to include rail.
“I think we are at a large agency, and we have intelligent people here. We're doing a lot of really great things, so I'm excited about progressing in this role,” said Hiott. “We just need to continue being strategic, ensuring proper communication across departments, and making decisions at the right levels to avoid delays. Transforming the organization to be nimble and open is key.”
But Hiott said his love for transit is much bigger than him.
"It's a community service. Many people have no other option, and they navigate transit. I want to provide the best service and improve the customer experience."
Hiott, who identifies as a gay man, thrives at Metro due to its inclusive environment. Walking in the Capital Pride Parade with Metro colleagues and General Manager Randy Clarke earlier this month was a memorable experience, he said.

“I have been very fortunate that I've been able to be true to who I am. I never felt like I needed to hide it. Working at an agency that is so supportive of different groups is very meaningful to me, and I'm proud to be a part of it and to know that I work at a place that supports who I am.”
He credits “good bosses” who recognized his potential and supported his growth.
“They pushed me, supported me, and gave me opportunities. I’ve felt comfortable moving up because I’ve worked for good people.”
With every role, Hiott felt he walked further into his life’s purpose. However, growing into these roles wasn't always easy. “I had to understand and respect different roles and responsibilities. I've learned a lot and been humbled, which made me a better leader. I listen and understand before offering my opinion.”
Hiott attributes his success to a combination of being in the “right place, right time,” and his work ethic. “I believe I deserved every opportunity and worked hard to position myself accordingly.” He also embraced failure and constructive feedback, something his younger self struggled with. “I'm not afraid to fail. I don't mind receiving constructive feedback to help me improve. I think that's been very helpful for me.”
His advice for those entering the world of transit:
“Don't be afraid. Discover your passion. If you enjoy what you do and like the people around you, you will be successful.”
And his younger self couldn’t be prouder of the man he is today.
