The 'Passion-Paisa' Paradox: An artificial division between what we "want" and what we "need"

The 'Passion-Paisa' Paradox: An artificial division between what we "want" and what we "need"

In today's fast-paced world, many people struggle with the choice between pursuing their passion and chasing financial success. However, what if this conflict is merely an illusion? By examining it through the concept of maya, a Hindu idea of illusion, this supposed paradox begins to fade away.

1. Understanding Maya: The Illusion of Duality

Maya suggests that our material desires—whether for wealth, success, or purpose—are fleeting. The perceived divide between passion and financial gain is just another aspect of this illusion. Both are impermanent, and attachment to either can lead to cycles of dissatisfaction.

2. Passion and Paisa as Tools, Not Destinations

Rather than viewing passion and paisa as opposing forces, we can consider them as tools for navigating life. Passion brings creativity and joy, while paisa provides the means to sustain ourselves. When seen this way, the conflict between them disappears.

3. Aligning with Dharma: A Higher Purpose

The key to transcending this illusion lies in aligning with dharma—our higher purpose. When we live in harmony with our dharma, passion and financial stability naturally fall into place, complementing each other rather than competing. Purpose-driven action bridges the gap.

4. Examples of Transcending the Paradox

  • The Entrepreneur: Builds wealth to serve a greater goal, detaching from the idea of money as identity.
  • The Artist: Creates not for recognition but as a form of service or expression.
  • The Yogi in the Workplace: Balances mindfulness with ambition, using both passion and paisa as tools for growth.

5. True Fulfillment: Moving Beyond the Illusion

The truth is there’s no paradox. Both passion and paisa are temporary constructs. Real fulfillment comes from recognizing the self beyond these illusions. By detaching from outcomes and focusing on meaningful action, we move beyond the noise of the material world into clarity, peace, and balance.

So, the next time you feel torn, pause and ask yourself: Are passion and paisa the goal—or just steps on the path to something greater?
