For many of us, our passions and work rarely mix. According to Blue Dragon founder Michael Brosowski, though, it’s entirely possible to carve a business out of what you hold dear to your heart.
Speaking with me on The Brew, Brosowski detailed his incredible journey from an Australian country boy to an award winning activist who has helped provide shelter to over 1,500 homeless Vietnamese kids and saved more than 660 from human trafficking.
Starting out as an English teacher at Westfields Sports High School, Michael found a deep interest in Vietnamese culture due to the amount of students in his class with roots to the country. A few holidays to Vietnam later and Michael had fallen in love with it, deciding to follow his gut feeling and move there permanently.
He quickly began realising his passion was helping the street urchins in his new home of Hanoi. After doing what he could as one man, he tried to find a larger organisation to help combat the issue, but was unsuccessful. After receiving offers from locals who wanted to help him in his efforts, he decided to start his own charity business to fill the void: Blue Dragon was born.
While it would have seemed crazy to some that an English teacher would quit his stable job to follow a passion, Michael never gave it a second thought. He believes that this mantra of throwing caution to the wind and following one’s heart is something that can and should be adopted by anyone in business.
Once he had established a course of action, he was then able to formalise his business. Michael says that this is something most business could also learn from. By achieving natural growth, one can then plan more efficiently and with greater flexibllity for the future.
