In a world where we see a relentless pursuit of power and position, marked by leaders who prioritize personal gain over collective welfare, sacrificial leadership stands in stark contrast to the dominant narratives of individualism and self-preservation. Leaders who put self over others engage in destructive behaviors such as manipulating public perception, taking credit for collective achievements, or exploiting resources for personal gain. In such environments, the culture often becomes one where individuals are encouraged to compete rather than collaborate, to blame rather than appreciate, and to minimize rather than uplift. This leads to a lack of trust, disengagement, and a toxic environment. With all of these in mind, the need for sacrificial leaders couldn’t be more urgent.
Sacrificial leadership is the practice of leaders willingly prioritizing the greater good of their organization, community, or country over personal ambition or prolonged tenure. This type of leadership is characterized by a readiness to empower others, foster new ideas, and create a sustainable legacy through the nurturing and development of future leaders. Moreover, sacrificial leadership fosters a culture of continuous improvement and adaptability. And finally, it involves recognizing when to step aside or step down to allow new leaders to emerge, ensuring the longevity and continued success of the entity they serve.
By knowing when to step aside at the right time and doing it in a seamless way, leaders enable their organizations to remain dynamic, agile, and responsive to changes in the marketplace and society. This approach also ensures that incoming leaders are well-prepared to handle future challenges, and it can ignite a new burst of energy for those who have felt stuck and non-progressive.
The Consequences of Leaders Clinging to Power
When leaders are unwilling to step aside or step down, it can have detrimental effects on their organizations. Prolonged tenures can lead to stagnation, as new ideas and approaches are stifled. This reluctance to pass the baton can create a culture of complacency, where innovation is discouraged, and the status quo is maintained. As a result, organizations may struggle to stay competitive and relevant in an ever-changing environment.
Moreover, leaders who refuse to relinquish their positions may inadvertently create power struggles and internal conflicts. Such situations can erode trust, reduce morale, and hinder collaboration within the organization. Without a clear path for succession, the risk of a leadership vacuum increases, potentially leading to instability and a loss of direction. So let’s reflect on the moment we find ourselves in right now. A moment where sacrificial leadership has been exemplified out loud—where President Joe Biden's decision to prioritize the country's well-being by shifting the mantle to Vice President Kamala Harris. By doing so, President Biden demonstrated a commitment to fostering a new generation of leadership. His decision sent a surge of energy and excitement into what was deemed as a slowly dying campaign that was on a trajectory to potentially lose the Presidency and adversely affect the prospects of those down ballot. His willingness to heed the cries for him to step aside and to put the country’s needs first highlights the essence of sacrificial leadership.
We could argue that it should have been done sooner, or that it took another health scare (a bout with Covid) for him to get there, but the reality is, he got there and he was able to pass the baton to his Vice President, Kamala Harris. He not only ensured continuity but also paved the way for fresh ideas and approaches to governance. He is now being deemed a courageous leader that demonstrated this selfless and sacrificial act of leadership by his party and is being celebrated for his legacy of 50+ years of service to our country. This act of stepping aside for the greater good exemplifies how sacrificial leadership can positively impact the future of a nation.
Other Examples of Sacrificial Leadership
Google's founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, stepped down from their executive roles in 2019, handing over the reins to Sundar Pichai. This transition allowed for new strategic directions while maintaining the company's innovative spirit. The founders' willingness to empower Pichai demonstrated their commitment to the company's long-term success. Nelson Mandela's decision to step down as President of South Africa after just one term is a powerful example of sacrificial leadership. Mandela understood that the future of South Africa required new leaders to continue the work of reconciliation and nation-building. His willingness to relinquish power set a precedent for peaceful transitions and democratic governance.

Bob Iger, former CEO of Disney eventually stepped down from his CEO role, allowing new leadership to take the helm. His focus on creating a sustainable and innovative culture at Disney highlights his sacrificial approach. Bill Gates' transition from CEO of Microsoft to a philanthropic leader is another notable example. Gates stepped down as CEO in 2000 to focus on the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, allowing Steve Ballmer to lead Microsoft. This shift enabled Microsoft to continue its growth while Gates concentrated on addressing global health and education challenges. His decision to step aside for the greater good of humanity highlights the profound impact of sacrificial leadership. Steve Jobs' resignation as CEO of Apple in 2011, due to health reasons, allowed Tim Cook to take over. Cook's leadership has seen Apple become the first trillion-dollar company, benefiting from fresh ideas and continuity. Jobs' recognition of the need for new leadership ensured Apple's sustained success.
Sacrificial leadership doesn’t only mean stepping aside or stepping down from a position. As mentioned in my definition above, it also means developing and empowering others to assume leadership roles, fostering new ideas, and creating a culture where there is continuous improvement. Throughout history and in recent times there have been recognized sacrificial leaders. Steve Kerr, Head Coach of Golden State Warriors has been known for his inclusive and player-focused coaching style. He often deflects praise to his players and staff, and he encourages a team-first mentality. His willingness to prioritize the well-being and development of his players over his own accolades is a hallmark of sacrificial leadership.? The Prime Minister of New Zealand, Jacinda Ardern's leadership during crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic and the Christchurch mosque shootings, has been marked by empathy and selflessness. She has consistently put the well-being of her citizens first, often making personal sacrifices in the process.
Not every leader has the capacity, willingness, and strong sense of self identity to be a sacrificial leader like those highlighted above, but the skills needed to be one can be developed. Here are six that I recommend:
Conclusion
Sacrificial leadership is a vital approach in today's dynamic and fast-paced world. By recognizing the importance of passing the baton and empowering the next generation of leaders, sacrificial leaders ensure the continued success and adaptability of their organizations. The examples of President Joe Biden, and other leaders highlighted in this article illustrate the profound impact that this kind of leadership offers.
Organizations that embrace sacrificial leadership benefit from fresh ideas, innovation, and a culture of continuous improvement. When leaders make the commitment to develop the skills and behaviors of sacrificial leaders, not only does it enhance their organizations' resilience and competitiveness but it also contributes to a more inclusive and forward-thinking world. Sacrificial leadership is not about “relinquishing power” but about “empowering others” to lead, ensuring a brighter and more sustainable future for all.
