F&RM speaks to Dorian Lawrence about PAS 9980, what it is, and the impact it has had across its first year.
PAS 9980:2022 provides a methodology for the fire risk appraisal of external wall construction and cladding of existing multistorey and multi-occupied residential buildings.
The purpose of these appraisals is to assess the risk to occupants from a fire spreading over or within the external walls of a building, and decide whether, in the specific circumstances of the building, remediation or other mitigating measures to address the risk are considered necessary.
PAS 9980 is designed for use by competent fire engineers and other building professionals, but the key outputs will also be useful to those for whom such appraisals are carried out, and those who make decisions based on their outcome.
PAS 9980 replaced the Consolidated Advice Note with guidance that mirrors the Government’s new direction towards proportionality in building safety and came into effect on 31 January 2022.

2 年As advised in past forums when PAS9980 was drafted, I have been an advocate of a simple numerical system similar to the Housing Acts appraisal system for PAS9980 as known, hence as often elements that a competent engineer would consider may be out of kilter to tables as we see sometimes at frc when carrying out peer reviews and the like.
