A partnership between Novelis and Habitat for Humanity is improving recycling rates and building affordable homes in communities
Two years ago, Habitat for Humanity and Novelis launched a joint initiative to increase aluminum recycling in local communities and raise funds to build decent, affordable housing. Through the initiative, local Habitat organizations partner with civic groups, businesses and community partners to engage with their neighborhoods and get residents more involved in recycling. This year, Novelis provided $2,500 grants and recycling bins to 55 Habitat organizations across the U.S. and Canada to promote neighborhood sustainability and increase aluminum recycling efforts.
Aluminum is one of the most recycled and most recyclable materials. According to The Aluminum Association, the U.S. collects more than twice the amount of aluminum today for recycling efforts than it did in the 1980s.
That is why this joint initiative is so critical. Since its launch, we have seen the incredible impact it has had in local communities across the country. In the last two years, Habitat affiliates in the U.S. and Canada have collected and recycled nearly 150,000 pounds of aluminum and more than 4.7 million cans. This work comes with an additional bonus: We not only help improve the environment and keep aluminum out of landfills, but we also connect and engage with our neighbors to create affordable housing options in local communities.
Habitat and Novelis have a shared commitment to the health, safety, and well-being of the communities we serve. Since 2011, Novelis and Habitat have worked together in a range of activities that both supports Habitat’s mission and aligns with Novelis’ focus of excellence, innovation, integrity and environmental responsibility. Novelis employees have also volunteered on various home builds and have supported fundraisers to help build homes in partnership with families in their communities.
Every day, we are reminded that recycling has incredible impact on our communities and on our environment. When we recycle, we help improve the environment. When we improve the environment, we help create healthy communities that become the foundation for thriving families.
