As we prepare to close out 2024 and gear up for our annual leadership retreat in December, I’ve been reflecting on how far we’ve come in fostering leadership at Syarikat Ong. This year, we took a bold step forward by revamping our appraisal process, ensuring that our people, our greatest asset, experience continuous growth. The updated system incorporates dedicated training and annual reviews, all while integrating our broader KPIs. Trainers and trainees alike earn credits, solidifying a culture of development and progress.

However, training is only the beginning. At Syarikat Ong, our real focus is on preparing our people to step confidently into leadership roles. Reflecting on my own journey, I've learned that unconventional strategies often make the most significant impact when it comes to fostering leadership.

Think Like a Second-in-Command

Before the title is yours, start thinking like a deputy. At Syarikat Ong, we encourage our team to voice their ideas, lead initiatives, and make decisions, cultivating leadership before it’s formally handed to them. Leadership doesn’t mean waiting in line but stepping up when necessary.

Pursue Stretched Goals

At Syarikat Ong, we ask each team member to come up with three suggestions, solutions, and implementations — no matter how small or ambitious they may be. We understand not everything will work, and that’s okay. Setting bold goals is critical. Even if only a fraction is achieved, it’s still progress. Leadership means pushing boundaries, learning through the process, and accepting that not everything will be perfect.

Seek Out Contrarian Viewpoints

Consensus is comfortable, but growth requires discomfort. I encourage leaders to actively seek out differing perspectives and to challenge norms. This sharpens decision-making skills and keeps us from stagnating.

Develop a Visionary Outlook

Leadership requires forward thinking. Senior leaders must have the ability to look beyond immediate tasks and guide the team towards future goals. At Syarikat Ong, we focus on fostering visionary leadership, where the horizon is always in sight, and we anticipate trends.
