Partner’s Perspective: Turning Vision into Action
Syarikat Ong
Tailoring Corporate and Tax Solutions to Propel Your Business Vision Forward Since 1974
You recognise the importance, craft the policy meticulously, and announce its implementation, expecting to walk into an office buzzing with vibrant energy and activity. But instead, the reality hits you — nothing has changed. It’s business as usual.
This scenario is all too common in many SMEs where the transition from policy to practice proves to be the most formidable hurdle. Merely setting policies is never enough.
Active Engagement Over Passive Availability
For instance, an 'open door' policy isn’t sufficient. I don’t just keep my door open — I need to step out, engage with my team, initiate conversations, and challenge them to think outside the box. Engagement isn’t just about physical presence - it’s about utilising all platforms, including online channels like WhatsApp. Consistent effort across communication channels keeps the team aligned with the company’s vision, turning passive policies into active engagement.
Leading Like a Guide in the Wilderness
True leadership means being in the trenches with your team, not merely directing from afar. We need to walk alongside our team members, sharing in the challenges and triumphs alike. This hands-on approach not only builds trust but also cements our commitment to collectively navigate through challenges.
Balancing Client and Team Focus
Finding the time, energy, and attention for both clients and our team can seem daunting. There is no shortcut — it all comes down to mindset. If you make time for your clients, you must also make time for your team. Investing in our team's growth and development is absolutely vital.
The OGSM Journey: A Hard but Necessary Process
At Syarikat Ong, we conduct monthly OGSM (Objective - Goals - Strategies - Measurement) reviews to stay aligned with our goals and action plans. These meetings are often chaotic — leaders arrive distracted, unprepared, or dealing with other pressing issues. Yet, despite the messiness, progress is being made. Each session represents a small step forward, and that's what matters.
These baby steps are sharpening our ability to turn vision into measurable action. It’s about accepting change, fine-tuning plans, and rolling them out continuously. True entrepreneurial spirit means being unafraid to say, "I need to adjust my previous plan." It’s about facing our shortcomings and criticism head-on, knowing that through this process, we evolve and ultimately build a stronger version of ourselves.
