Canalys SVP Nicole Peng captured the mood of cautious optimism in an outstanding blog post analysing some of the positive signs, including returning inventory levels and normalizing component costs. Canalys’ latest smartphone forecast cut 2023 global shipments to 1.2 billion, down another 5.2% on 2022. But some positive signs are emerging in the market for the first time since the start of 2022.
Overall, Canalys forecasts that the smartphone market will return to growth in 2024 at 4.4%. In addition to a well-designed organizational structure and solid financial planning to weather the macroeconomic downturn, vendors should be aware of the many lessons we have learned over the past few years and take steps to avoid the potential pitfalls.

After the record highs of the pandemic, PC sales have slumped each quarter. US shipments declined 28% year-on-year to 14.0 million units in the first quarter of 2023. Despite the short-term struggle, Canalys anticipates a market recovery on the horizon. US PC shipments in Q4 2023 are expected to grow 6% year-on-year while full-year shipments in 2024 are forecasted to be 13% higher than in 2023.????
No area of tech is creating as much buzz as generative AI. In this blog, Canalys VP of Channels research Alex Smith reveals Canalys poll data showing that 41% of partners are now optimistic about the opportunities associated with AI. Canalys ran this same poll back in 2018 and what we now see is a large decline in the number of partners that are neutral on the opportunities, replaced by an influx of partners that are now feeling largely positive. It is safe to infer that ChatGPT is the primary driver behind this massive shift, and this is more recent evidence that 2023 is a turning point in AI adoption.?

Chief Analyst Matthew Ball explores the intersection of these two critical areas in his blog. Canalys estimates that demand for cybersecurity managed services will grow 16% to US$70.2 billion in 2023. Managed services represent the most significant growth opportunity for the cybersecurity channel, but capitalizing on it is not guaranteed for all partners.?

Competition in the cybersecurity channel will intensify, as nearly 50 highly funded pre-IPO vendors invest in their programs to accelerate expansion. Channel expansion will be challenged by a funding crunch, which has led to cuts in spending, layoffs and reduced valuations. Meanwhile, generative AI is poised to transform the cybersecurity ecosystem, with broad implications for threat actors, technology vendors, venture capital firms, channel partners, customers, cyber insurers and regulators.
Key findings from Canalys’ annual global sustainability survey. Despite the ongoing macroeconomic uncertainty, sustainability remains high on the agenda in 2023. Regional differences persist on sustainability, with EMEA continuing to lead while most partners in the Americas are still many years behind. The circular economy is growing, but improving customer awareness and perceptions of refurbished hardware remains challenging. Growing regulatory pressures are a key driver for the focus on sustainability.?
