Thomas and Vera next to one another during their training together. Thomas is looking down at Vera as she sits next to him during a quiet moment together.Gunnery Sergeant, Thomas McRae, received his yellow Labrador service dog, Vera, from America's VetDogs in 2014, two years after his road to recovery began. Thomas deployed four times as an infantryman: once to Japan, and three more deployments to Iraq. After his fourth deployment, he left the infantry and volunteered for explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) work. Thomas stepped on an IED resulting in the loss of both of his legs, one of his arms, and severe head trauma.

Did you know that #guidedogs cannot tell whether a traffic light is green or red, or when it changes color? Those who are visually impaired use audible cues like traffic noises to determine when they think it is safe to cross, and then signal their dog to move forward. If a car is coming, the dog will refuse to obey the cue. This is called intelligent disobedience.

This is the first day we met our magnificent miracle dog! He changed my veteran husband's life forever for the better, and mine as well! We can’t thank this amazing organization enough for all the time they put in to find him his special dog, and all the caring wonderful people that trained us to help make this match the wonderful success it is. They paid for everything, including our airfare to their facility, room and board for two weeks, and all the expenses incurred to train our beautiful dog.
