Partner interview : Siegfried Scholz, President of European Suppliers of Waste to Energy Technology (ESWET).
Bio360 Expo
Bio360 2025 - 05-26 February 2025 in Nantes, FR. The professional event dedicated to ?bioenergy and ?bioeconomy
Today we are talking with Mr. Siegfried Scholz, President of ESWET, the European association representing manufacturers in the field of Waste-to-Energy. The purpose of ESWET is to raise awareness of the positive implications of?Waste-to-Energy?in terms of?sustainable waste management, clean and reliable energy, and protection of the environment.
Technology from the ESWET members is the heart of most of the Waste-to-Energy plants in Europe and worldwide, allowing the?recovering of energy and materials from non-recyclable waste?which would otherwise be landfilled.
What do you think the future opportunities and challenges are for bioenergy and bioeconomy?
Throughout Europe, the power market is impacted by the growth of renewable energy on one side and the reduced availability of fossil fuels to make good for the unpredictability of wind and solar power. Biogenic fuels and residual waste are available and will be in the focus as reliable power sources. Therefore, many opportunities will arise during this year and the years to come. However, development and growth are threatened by regulatory changes and ambiguities and by fluctuations of prices which may impact the financial viability of projects needed to support the grid.

What are the most promising upcoming technologies / processes in your opinion?
The key technology to face the expected challenges is the IRF integrated resource-recovery facility, as it provides reliable power as well as heat to the industry with an average content of about 50% of biogenic fuels. To become carbon-negative, CCUS technology will be applied to sequestrate CO2 from the flue gases, assuming that CO2 certificates will reach a level to justify such investment.
