Particles as gravitational sinks
v. 6 n. 16
The Universe appears to be a vast emptiness sprinkled here and there by bits of matter. About five percent is visible matter and the remainer is unknown and referred to as dark energy and dark matter depending on scale. Fundamental particles like electrons and quarks are considered point-like, having zero extent and considered gravitational sources or proposed sinks (see Figure 1).
There are two ways to look at the situation. Is the ambient gravitational field of the Universe the result of Figure 1a, or 1b where the vertexes are point particles? This field and space are indistinguishable according to general relativity. Elementary particles as sources would provide five percent and as sinks ninety-five percent of the ambient gravitational field of the Universe, and arguably the latter would provide the entire volume of the known Universe given particles of zero extent. How an entity that has no extent induces any gravitational field or space is problematical.
On creation of a particle as source, its gravitational field would move outward at light speed. On creation of a particle as sink, the ambient gravitational field would immediately connect to the particle. This distinct difference makes the sink hypothesis testable.
Possible additional significance of particles as sinks:
