Participatory Mapping Tool to Understand Vaccination Hesitancy and Acceptancy

Objective:????????????To facilitate Mentors to understand the issue, problem and solutions related to vaccine hesitancy, by facilitating a structured dialogue with community members using evidences and perceptions that are carried by community members.

Plan: Canvass this process in at least 10% of 850 hamlets, where interventions addressing Vaccine hesitancy is being addressed.

Pilot: At the site supported by Faisal and Shabana Foundation among Irulas tribes, Tamil Nadu.

Preparation:??????Inform the Village that a team is visiting to seek information on Vaccination acceptance and hesitancy. A minimal mobilizing is needed. Carry chart papers, some semi-prepared ones with frames and templates; along with colour pens and pencils. Carry some chickpeas.

Covid Protocols:???????????????Wear masks, and every participant in the process needs to wear masks. Discussion in open ground, under shade. Not more than 8 persons in a group. Keep sanitisers. Keep many pens and pencils, so that they do not have to exchange them.

Identify Eight participants from the Village, including the Mentor and Mobiliser, with at least 5 women.

Discussion 2. Get Vaccination Status (percentage of HHs of that category who are vaccinated)

Discussion 3????????????????????????Draw the Social map of the Hamlet (about 50 to 60 HHs) (Collection of Accurate Information at Hamlet Level)

Draw all Households in a chart paper; their location and assign a number. Use the number that they already have.

·??????Mark H, M, L, VL for each HH

·??????Mark V, if all adults vaccinated

·??????Mark M, if only men vaccinated

·??????Mark W, if only women vaccinated

·??????Mark S, if some remain not vaccinated

·??????Mark D, if any disabled remain not vaccinated

·??????Mark X, if they so not have any information on vaccination.

Multiple marks possible. Count number of HHs against each category. Also write on top total number of HHs, and total adults in these HHs covered.

Identify 5 to 6 members from these HHs, who have recently got vaccinated.

Discussion 4:????What are the reasons they got vaccinated?

Once they see the results, ask them their opinion on the relative significance of these reasons. They may state anything they feel like.
