How do conflicts arise?

Consider a room filled with people talking different languages. Everyone wants to understand each other but simply doesn’t have the tools to do so. Attempts to communicate can often fail completely or lead to further misunderstanding. Frustrations are kept inside until they bubble to the surface, resulting in emotional outbursts and lasting professional tension. Essentially, conflict in the workplace functions in much the same way—i.e., when individual differences are under-prioritized instead of harnessed. Without mutual understanding and the tools to have positive, productive interactions in the workplace, businesses weather the conflicts of a group of individuals, rather than a team working perfectly in synergy with each other.

What happens to a team under stress?

When teams are put under stress, it brings any existing issues to light. Poor team dynamics can best be understood as weak, breakable bonds that struggle to flex or adapt when met with time pressures and challenges at work. Think: tense, unproductive conversations, unwillingness to support others, impacted decision-making, criticisms and nit-picking, negativity, and a decrease in overall productivity. Additionally, individual strengths and weaknesses can become more pronounced under stress, and without effective coping mechanisms, some will drive themselves towards burnout while others will drop off in interest completely. On the flip side, a group with strong team dynamics will manage stress very differently—as a catalyst for growth. With challenge comes high performance, resilience, adaptability, tighter collaboration, and the development of trust between team members.

How can misunderstandings be avoided?

The only way to avoid misunderstandings in the workplace, is to make a conscious, active commitment to helping employees develop greater understanding and empathy for others and of themselves. To return to the idea of a group of people speaking different languages—there’s no problem with this, in essence. Conversely, it’s an enormous advantage for an organization to have a rich and diverse group of individuals in their ranks who each have different perspectives, experiences, opinions, and insights to bring to the table. Unfortunately, this can quickly become a disadvantage unless harnessed correctly. When businesses invest time and resources into learning initiatives that strengthen communication and understanding between colleagues in a proactive way—that’s when misunderstandings become fewer and farther between. The combination of hard skills with Soft Skills results to future skills.

How does a team master difficult situations?

Simply put: together! No one wins alone, and teamwork is key when it comes to mastering difficult situations. In the face of challenges, a cohesive team leverages collective strengths, pooling diverse skills and perspectives to navigate complexities. Effective communication becomes paramount, ensuring that every team member is on the same page and contributing their unique insights. Additionally, a shared sense of responsibility and commitment fosters a collaborative spirit, inspiring the team to persevere through adversity. By facing challenges collectively, teams not only overcome obstacles more efficiently but also emerge from difficult situations stronger, fortified by the bonds forged through teamwork.

How do we make sure that everyone is happy?

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again—it’s about Productivity AND Happiness. When managers expect their employees to be productive amid low mood, boredom, or frustration — they’re demonstrating a fundamental lack of understanding for people and how they work best. Productivity simply doesn’t happen when employees are unhappy, and the more unproductive employees become? The less happy they are as a result! It’s both a vicious cycle and a careful balance. A workplace that prioritizes the development of communication skills, recognizes individual talents, respects and provides for differing needs and requirements, offers opportunities for personal and professional growth—that’s the kind of workplace where happiness abounds and team dynamics thrive.
