Part Two on that Dreaded Phrase

Part Two on that Dreaded Phrase

This week, more responses to use in a hard season (like when a loved one is in a mental health crisis*), when a well-meaning acquaintance friend or family member utters the dreaded?"just let me know if you need anything."?Because when you're in a crisis, you may not be able to THINK of anything.

Not in a crisis right now? Save and keep these handy for when you are, OR turn them around for yourself, so YOU can avoid saying the dreaded phrase to someone you care about, and instead, make one of these super helpful offers. (Did you miss last week's newsletter? Hit reply and I'll shoot you the fun video!)

Meanwhile, try any of these:

  • Could you hang out with my love one for a?couple of hours this week so I can take a nap/go for a walk/browse Sephora because I need to be normal for five minutes?
  • Yes, we’re exhausted and the next couple of weeks will be rough. Can you organize a few friends to bring us some meals? We love anything pasta, and we hate mushrooms and fish. (Yes, you can really say that, it’s ok. No one wants a mushroom fish casserole, speak up for yourself.)

  • (For really good friends, your mom, or your mother-in-law....) Oh, my gosh, we’re completely out of clean clothes. It would be so great if you could do a couple of loads of laundry for us.

These?suggestions are all from We've Got This: Journal for Parents with Kids Struggling with Mental Health . Having quick answers like these at the ready can make it possible for you to get the help you need, and for your friends and family to actually help you! There are many more suggestions, tips and trick in the journal. Check it out and consider getting a copy for yourself or a friend.

Remember, we're in this together, and we can do this.

What has been helpful to me when I have been in a tough season or crisis is when loved ones have said "I am here for you." This means they're there whenever I need them even if I don't know in that particular instance what that looks like. Support systems are key!!
