Part of the team: how agencies are ensuring that remote workers stay connected

Since the end of the pandemic (which forced most everyone to adapt to at-home work) we've certainly see an uptick in the number of hybrid work setups. However, as many will know all to well, remote work can be isolating. Whilst it's great to have time to focus without the distractions of an office environment, if team members begin to feel distanced from their colleagues it can lead to wider communication issues. What methods have agencies put in place to ensure that teams stay connected, wherever their based?

Social days

You're certainly not alone if the first thing you do when you hear the words "work social" is roll your eyes. Old school team building activities (sorry to everyone who has had to endure trust fall exercises whilst wearing a suit) certainly aren't everyone's cup of tea. However, agencies have sought to ensure scheduled social plans that encourage the entire company (regardless of location) to get together and let off steam. We've seen agencies investing back into their teams by scheduling genuinely fun day trips (including activities like clay pigeon shooting, axe throwing, pottery workshops, cooking lessons and high wire adventures) in a bid to reward the hard work of their employees and to encourage team bonding without too great an emphasis on work.

Accessibility

Key to ensuring that everyone feels included, we've also noticed greater efforts by agencies to improve the accessibility and inclusion of any social activities. It's certainly heartening to see agencies in the sector taking active steps to ensure that everyone can take part in the fun; whether by providing transport and accomodation for out-of-town workers so that they don't have to worry about a late commute home, or ensuring that social events are booked in wheelchair accessible spaces or are not always centered around physical activity. It's also pleasant change to see companies stepping away from a booze-centered social culture. Whilst no one is looking to stop Friday nights at the pub, it's great to see more companies finding new ways to include those (who for either cultural, religious or personal reasons) chose not to drink.

Staying Connected

Working from home could mean that the only time you interact with team members is on a client call or when someone has a pressing questions. However, more companies are mandating virtual social times to ensure that remote workers can bond with new and existing team members in between in person social days. When working from home, it can also be difficult to switch off at the end of a long working day, as it's all too easy to lose track of time when you don't have a train home to catch. These virtual opportunities to connect are key to ensuring that team members continue to reinforce existing relationships and foster new ones whilst working from home, whilst also helping to ensure that team members take scheduled social breaks on days when they're not in the office.
