Environmental, Social and Governance Subject Matter Expert?

Job Description

The Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) Subject Matter Expert is a client facing role responsible for developing and overseeing environmental, social and corporate governance projects within the firm.? The ESG SME will also be responsible for internal ESG compliance activities including reviewing and appraising proposed internal policies to ensure PwC remains socially and environmentally sustainable and comply with internationally recognized best practices.?


The role reports to the ESG Leader and works with OGC and R&Q to define steps necessary to address compliance gaps where they arise from policy and identifies opportunities to add value proactively, beyond compliance and risk mitigation, and contribute to long-term developmental impact and sustainability within Africa.?


The role is responsible for supporting the environmental, social and governance aspects of transactions in the PwC portfolio and for developing business opportunities related to ESG and Sustainability.?

The Environmental, Social and Governance SME works closely with clients and external stakeholders to achieve the business development and policy goals of PwC in regards to ESG best practice and standards.?

Main Functions and Responsibilities??

Client Facing

Preparation of Contracts

  • Respond to RFPs for environmental and social assessments;
  • Draft and integrate specific clauses for social and environmental safeguards;
  • Participate in the preparation of proposals related to ESG issues;

With regard to the monitoring of environmental and social management:

  • Work on projects within the framework of environmental and social issues;
  • Analyse project activities to assess their adequacy with national environmental and social requirements and monitor environmental and social management plans;?
  • Provide technical expertise on key issues related to environmental and social impact assessment and on sustainability risks in the design, preparation, implementation and supervision of client projects taking into consideration best industry practices and standards;??
  • Manage and conduct environmental and social due diligence;?
  • Identify all key potential social and environmental impacts and risks of transactions and ensure that their magnitude and significance are well understood by clients and staff;?
  • Support the proposition of new ESG-themed products and create ESG insights about existing products which contribute to client satisfaction and drive new sales activities;
  • Carry out statistical activities, namely the collection, analyses, storage and retrieval of statistical data, and provision of support to consultants in carrying out research related to ESG;
  • Work on projects across sectors including Agriculture, Food, Water and sanitation, Forests, landscape regeneration, energy, infrastructure, finance and legislation/public policy.
  • Ensure implementation of consultations with project stakeholders including vulnerable groups.
  • Ensure monitoring of social components of projects;
  • Identify, assess risks, develop and implement risk management plans with the collaboration of other specialists, for Occupational Hygiene, Health and Safety Risk management, COVID 19 response plans adapted to different client projects;

Internal Firm Role

  • Contribute to the development and implementation of quarterly/annual environmental and social operational work plans;
  • Ensure the integration of, and compliance with, environmental and social risk and impact mitigation measures;
  • Ensure the holding of environmental and social training sessions dedicated to the staff and other stakeholders.? Formulate all appropriate recommendations to improve the performance of work in terms of environmental and social safeguards;
  • Ensure that the policyholder understands the applicable ESG policies, guidelines and project-specific requirements, and has the necessary commitment and capacity to manage social and environmental impacts and/or risks adequately and supported by mechanisms that facilitate implementation;??
  • Conduct consultations with stakeholders in accordance with relevant policies and guidelines and be responsible for reporting on such??
  • Report on and disseminate good practices and generated knowledge.?

Other Responsibilities

  • Identify institutional responsibilities and capacity-building needs of beneficiaries and partners;
  • Capitalize and evaluate the experience gained from implementation of safeguard instruments with a view to highlighting good practices, lessons learned and recommendations for its replication;
  • Ensure the quality of ESG outputs;
  • Document any good practices experienced as a result of the implementation of activities;
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual action plans, as well as the drafting of periodic project reports.? Produce on a quarterly basis, a separate specific environmental and social monitoring report;
  • Ensure efficient filing and archiving of processed files

Qualifications & Attributes?

Education?

An advanced degree (at least Masters or equivalent) in statistics, mathematics, operational research, economics, engineering, environmental management, environmental sciences or relevant field.?

Excellent knowledge of database, statistical methods and data analysis is desirable

Experience?

At least 10 years of relevant experience in working with international/national or private renewable energy firms, government agencies, international development banks, agricultural, forestry to identify environmental/social risk and issues and develop mitigation measures to ensure compliance with good international industry practice.?

Exposure to African and global development institutions and their operational practice will be a desired attribute.?

Knowledge and experience in global environmental standards and frameworks: such as UN Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), Sustainability Accounting Standards Board (SASB), Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) and others

The ideal candidate must have at least 7 years of experience in corporate sustainability with a global renewable energy business, development bank, private equity firm, agriculture or public policy institution.

Skills and strong experience in the field of environmental policy and biodiversity management

Strong skills and experience in community-based natural resource management;

Skills and experience in conservation geography and in mapping and GIS (geospatial information systems);

Skills and experience in construction, infrastructure, solar installations, wind farms, hydroelectric dams and/or ports;

Experience designing or redesigning an ESG program;

Be able to conduct an independent evaluation with a clear understanding of the objectives and process for carrying out the required evaluation work;

Proven ability to apply best practices and to provide analytical advice;

Ability to propose and apply a scientific methodology to analyze the impacts of economic sectors on biodiversity as well as cost-benefit analysis based on already tested methodology;

Ability to prepare carbon footprints and utilize ESG tools;

At least 5 years of proven experience in supporting and advising on the integration of biodiversity conservation and sustainable development into sectoral policies and/or business strategies and projects;

At least 5 years of proven experience and expertise in the economic sectors and industries, including Agriculture and Infrastructure), with experience in formulating recommendations for change;

At least 07 years of proven and progressive relevant professional experience in the design, implementation or monitoring-evaluation of forest, wildlife and / or environmental development projects financed by development partners;?

At least 5 years of experience in the development or implementation of management plans for protected areas; supporting communities in climate-resilient agricultural practices and / or conducting monitoring and evaluation of climate profiles specifically in the agricultural and wildlife sector;

Experience in rural areas in the agricultural sector, environment, forestry, management of national parks;

Experience of collating, manipulating and displaying data to create insight and management information;

Proven experience in transport infrastructure projects.

Language Skills?

Excellent oral and written communication skills in French and English and a familiarity with drafting and articulating ideas in a clear and concise manner with outstanding attention to detail. Good knowledge of the computer tool (Google Suite, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Alteryx, PowerBI)
