[Part 5] Who stole the gold?

Jeff had one goal for the day - to go home early. He’d stay during the lunch break. Finish up as much work as could be fit into the hour. Then, he would leave and spend some time by himself.

He walked towards Mark’s office to let him know of his plan. Nora and Steve were already there. They looked at him with blank faces.

“What’s up? What’s going on?” Jeff asked.

“I was hoping you had the answer to that,” Mark responded.

“What are you talking about?”

Mark pointed to the office TV with his chin. A black and white CCTV version of Jeff ran towards the office door. He was holding a baseball bat in his hand.

The CCTV Jeff unlocked the door and walked in. He stood in front of the door for about three minutes. He had buried his face in his hands. His body was convulsing.

“What were you crying about?” asked Steve.

“I thought about how dumb you are. And it hurt so bad.” Jeff retorted.

Steve showed him a finger.

Mark said, “Look, guys. We have a serious problem on our hands. Jeff, this is your chance to confess.”

“To confess what?”

Mark shook his head. He said, “Alright. Someone took one of the gold bars. I’m not saying it’s you, but the CCTV shows you were here alone.”

“Yeah, it also shows I didn’t go upstairs. What are you driving at?”

“Nothing, Jeff. Relax. We’ve got to get to the bottom of this, though. I’m shutting down the office till tomorrow. Everyone go home and think about what’s happened.”

“Why don’t you just call the police?” Jeff asked.

“Because we don’t need that kind of trouble now, do we? This theft could destroy the acquisition deal. Besides, I’m sure it’s just one of you playing a joke.”

Jeff said, “Well, it’s not very funny. So we can go home now?”?

Mark glared at him. “That’s what I said. Get out, but I want you all in here tomorrow morning. And if the gold doesn’t show up, I’m calling the cops.”
