"We are called to be architects of the future, not its victims." – Buckminster Fuller

When I first considered the meaning of "maker," it didn't resonate with me. It's not a term I've ever embodied myself. As a child, I was told that I wasn't "good with my hands." In fact, my grandmother called me "cack-handed," and it has stayed with me all these years. However, on deeper reflection, I've realized it's a role I love and play often.

A maker is someone who actively engages in the process of creation. This can involve building, crafting, innovating, or problem-solving. Makers bring ideas to life through their actions, contributing tangible solutions and advancements to society. To me, it feels like the archetypal role of an Alchemist, and I play that role really well.

Think about it. As a coach and consultant, I sell change even though it is invisible, intangible, and challenging to communicate. I have grown many successful businesses by taking an idea and creating a business that delivers incredible value to its clients. I have written books, designed countless products and programs, and am known in my community as someone who continuously creates high-quality content.

You only need to take a quick glance at the hard drive on my computer to see the truth of everything I have created for myself and my clients throughout my career.

The Essence of a Sacred Maker

In the context of being a sacred changemaker, a maker is someone who channels their skills, creativity, and energy toward creating positive, meaningful change. Makers play a crucial role in shaping the world. They are the visionaries and doers who turn abstract concepts into reality. By taking the initiative and applying their skills and talents, makers drive progress and innovation. They are often characterized by their resourcefulness, perseverance, and ability to think outside the box.

For sacred changemakers, being a maker means more than just creating products or solutions. It also involves creating a legacy of positive impact that aligns with their values and vision for a better world. They are driven by a sense of purpose and a commitment to serving the greater good.

As you reflect on the idea of being a maker, consider how it resonates with your own experiences and aspirations. Perhaps you've always been a problem-solver, an innovator, or someone who brings ideas to life in unique and impactful ways. Whether you realize it or not, you, too, may embody the role of a maker, contributing to positive change through your actions and creativity.

Examples of Sacred Changemakers

Here are some examples of how sacred changemakers harness their skills and passions to make a difference:

  1. Coaches and Consultants: These individuals guide others toward personal and professional growth. By offering insights, strategies, and support, they help clients navigate challenges, set and achieve goals, and become more effective and fulfilled. They often work to foster greater self-awareness and purpose, expanding their practices with the principles of sacred changemaking.
  2. Regenerative Business Leaders: These leaders are at the forefront of creating businesses that sustain and regenerate ecosystems and communities. They implement practices that restore and replenish resources, foster resilience, and promote long-term well-being. Their innovative approaches to business serve as models for sustainable development, environmental stewardship, and purpose-driven profits.
  3. Conscious Parents and Educators: Parents and educators who embrace conscious practices play a vital role in shaping the next generation. They create nurturing, inclusive, and empowering environments that foster holistic development. By instilling values of empathy, respect, and social responsibility, they cultivate future changemakers who are mindful of their impact on the world.
  4. Innovative Entrepreneurs: Entrepreneurs who create businesses with a social or environmental mission exemplify the spirit of sacred making. They design products or services that address critical issues, such as sustainable technologies, ethical fashion, or fair trade goods. Their ventures not only generate profit but also contribute to societal well-being and help to create a better future for us all.
  5. Community Leaders: Community leaders who initiate projects to improve their local areas are powerful examples of sacred makers. Whether establishing community gardens, organizing educational programs, or advocating for policy changes, these leaders take action to create environments where everyone can thrive. They advocate for the changes needed in their local environment.
  6. Artists and Creatives: Artists, writers, musicians, and other creatives use their talents to inspire and provoke thought. Their work can be disruptive, challenge societal norms, raise awareness about important issues, and offer new perspectives. Their creations often catalyze dialogue and change in the wider world.
  7. Activists and Advocates: Activists and advocates who fight for social justice and environmental sustainability are essential and probably the most obvious makers of change. They organize movements, campaign for rights, and work tirelessly to bring about systemic change. Their dedication and passion ignite collective action and drive significant transformations.

These examples illustrate the diverse ways in which sacred changemakers bring their visions to life, demonstrating that making a difference can take many forms. Whether you identify as a coach, consultant, entrepreneur, leader, or artist, the key is to move from intention to action. It's not just about grand gestures or large-scale projects; impactful change can start with something as simple as a single conversation. Each action, no matter how small, contributes to the greater good.

Moving Into Action

Recognizing yourself as a maker is just the beginning. The true power of changemaking lies in moving into action. This involves transforming your ideas and intentions into concrete steps that drive progress and create impact. Whether it's through a groundbreaking project or a meaningful conversation, taking action is essential to making a difference. The process of making is about harnessing your creativity, skills, and passion to bring your vision to life. Here are key steps to guide you on this journey of turning aspirations into reality:

  1. Vision and Ideation: The process begins with a vision or idea. Sacred makers often start with a clear sense of purpose and a desire to address a specific issue or need. They brainstorm, research, and refine their ideas to create a solid foundation for action.
  2. Planning and Strategy: Once the idea is formulated, makers develop a plan and strategy to bring it to life. This involves setting goals, identifying resources, and mapping out the steps needed to achieve their vision. Effective planning is crucial for turning ideas into reality.
  3. Action and Implementation: This is where the actual making happens. Sacred makers take tangible steps to create, build, or implement their ideas. They might design prototypes, launch initiatives, or build networks to support their efforts. A commitment to making a difference drives action.
  4. Reflection and Adaptation: After taking action, makers reflect on their progress and outcomes. They evaluate what worked, what didn’t, and how they can improve. This iterative process of reflection and adaptation ensures continuous growth and effectiveness.

Self-Reflective Questions:

  1. Creative Action: What is one idea or project you’ve been passionate about but haven't started yet? What is holding you back, and how can you overcome this barrier?
  2. Impact Assessment: Reflect on a recent action or project you completed. How did it impact you and others? What did you learn from the process?
  3. Future Vision: Imagine the positive impact you want to create in the next five years. What does the world need from you? What steps can you take now to start making this vision a reality?

Exercise:

Vision Board: Create a vision board representing your goals and dreams as a maker. Include images, words, and symbols that inspire you. Place it somewhere you can see regularly to remind yourself of your aspirations and the actions needed to achieve them.
