Part 3: Turkish Candidate in International Job Interview

Part 3: Turkish Candidate in International Job Interview

Did you know that the way you phrase your sentences in English can make or break your confidence in a job interview?

I have noticed many Turkish professionals unknowingly using phrases that make them sound less confident in job interviews.

These expressions often come from direct translations from Turkish to English. Some emerge from cultural habits.

Whatever the reason is, they weaken your message.

Your words shape how hiring managers perceive you.

A slight tweak in your phrasing can instantly make you sound more confident and professional.

Let’s look at some common mistakes and their stronger alternatives:

? “Allow me to introduce myself”

? “I’d like to introduce myself.”

The first sounds overly formal and distant, while the second is more natural and engaging.

? “If I have a chance to work for you”

? “I look forward to contributing to your team.”

Instead of asking for a chance, assume you’ll add value from day one.

? “Just wanted to share this”

? “Here’s something valuable to consider.”

“Just” weakens your message—own your ideas!

? “Can I explain myself?”

? “Let me clarify.”

You don’t need permission to explain—take charge of your words.

? “I will try to explain”

? “I’ll explain.”

“Try” makes it sound like you’re unsure. Be clear and direct.

Confidence isn’t about speaking perfect English. It’s about owning your words and building credibility.

Before your next interview, practice rephrasing common responses with a friend or mentor. Notice how small changes transform your presence!

If you’d love to practice with a former Executive Recruiter, here’s my Interview Practice offer.

If you missed out, here is Part 2 about “Thinking out loud” and Part 1, “Switch from “we” to “I”’.
