Part 3 - Pi?a/ Pineapple Fabric in Fashion

Pineapple, a fruit renowned for its myriad health benefits, not only promotes healthy skin and protects against the common flu but also shows potential in synergising with chemotherapy to suppress the growth of cancer cells. Pineapple also aids in maintaining a healthy body by cleansing our internal system through its fibres, facilitating proper digestion.

Surprisingly, many are unaware that the leaves of the Pineapple plant yield a fibre called Pi?a (Pi?a being Spanish for Pineapple). Pi?a is an exquisite indigenous fabric derived from the Spanish Red Pineapple's leaves and is considered the finest among Philippine handwoven fabrics. Often blended with silk or polyester, Pi?a creates a beautiful textile fabric.

The manufacturing process of this fabric predominantly takes place in the Philippines. It involves carefully cutting the leaves from the fruit and extracting the fibres using a blade, which is gently pulled or separated from the leaf. The resulting fibres appear stiff due to the inherent strength of the leaf. Each strand of Pi?a fibre is meticulously hand-scraped, knotted one by one to create an endless thread, and finally, it is handwoven to craft the exquisite Pi?a cloth.

The finished Pi?a fabric is a marvel of lightweight and breathable material, making it increasingly popular in mainstream clothing brands, especially in warm weather attire. Its versatility extends beyond clothing, as we can now find Pi?a being utilised in bags, shoes, and home accessories like tablecloths.
