Okay, let's be real. The tech world changes at lightning speed. New programming languages, cutting-edge frameworks, the latest cybersecurity threats – it's enough to make your head spin. Especially if you're a veteran transitioning into tech, that pressure to keep up can feel overwhelming.
But here's the secret that might surprise you: the key to unstoppable tech career growth isn't about memorizing every single tech trend. It's all about mindset. Specifically, it's about embracing a growth mindset of continuous learning.
The Military Mentality You Already Have
Think back to your military service. From basic training to deployment, that military mentality is all about adapting, overcoming obstacles, and constantly expanding your skillset. The tech world operates at that same breakneck speed.? Those who see constant change as an opportunity will thrive but if you fear it, you will be left behind. I know that sounds terrifying but it’s reality.
Trust me, I get it. That transition from the rigid structure of the military to the ever-shifting tech landscape can be jarring. The military values deep expertise in a specific role. Tech often feels like the target is constantly moving. It's enough to make even a seasoned combat veteran break into a sweat. But let’s reframe that fear. Again, think back to basic training. Did you know everything on day one? Heck no! But you had the grit and willingness to learn, day after day and challenge after challenge.
For over 20 years, I thrived under pressure as a senior non-commissioned officer in the United States Army. I led small and large teams, and managed everything from logistics, operations, and personnel actions/crises.
But in 2018 when I retired, the reality of civilian life hit me hard, and I didn’t know what to expect outside of the military. My transition to tech roles - user engagement, customer success and then program management - felt like basic training all over again. But in 2018 when I retired, the reality of civilian life hit me hard, and I didn’t know what to expect outside of the military. My transition to tech - user engagement, customer success and then program management - felt like basic training all over again. ?The learning curve was steep, and I felt like I was behind my peers. But then it clicked. Instead of fearing change and letting the fear of the unknown paralyze me, I channeled my thinking and leveraged my ‘military mentality’, reframing the challenge as a new mission. By leaning into my strengths and embracing a relentless drive, I not only caught up but began to excel.
