Part 2
Last week I posted thoughts on - Leaders, whatever their age, must be mature enough to face challenges and handle consequences in a cool and professional manner.??
I learned this lesson early on in my career and at the age of 24.? As the Director of Marketing and Ground Operations for a helicopter tour company, 1992 was not a good year.? In September an accident killed a close friend and three tourists over Niagara Falls.? At roughly 12pm on September 29, 1992 life and business changed forever.
Tragedy strikes and things come to a sudden stop.? Confusion takes over.? Suddenly everything changes and you have no control of what is happening.??
Once the shock wears off you have to start picking up the pieces and life and business continue.? In my case the business needed to be put back together and a future mapped out.? For me it was a time of tremendous learning and growth.? Working with other employees and the FAA a new certification needed to be applied for and received.? It was tough at first as a young gung-ho kid working with much older and concrete people.
I learned many lessons during that next year, we received our certification and the business was put back together and up and running within about 12 months.? The decision was ultimately made to sell the business and it was time for a new chapter.
A couple lessons that have stood out:
