Part 2: Life by Design

Part 2: Life by Design

At the end of January 2020, I shared my experience of being half way through my career break. I was overwhelmed with the response to that post which I’ll admit was a large part of why I wanted to write it in the first place. I knew I wasn’t the only one feeling like I was.

At that point in time, my boys were both about to start school which meant I’d be welcoming some very much desired “me time”. I was full of excitement of what the following months would bring ……

And to make a long story short, I made the decision to resign from my full time job and start my own business!!!

The end ??

No, not seriously……am sure you all want to know how I got from there to here. So here goes:

The longer I was off, the more I started to ponder the notion of life by design. How could I create a life where work fitted into it and not the other way around?? Where I could do more of the work I LOVE and not feel like I wasn’t being the best version of myself most the time?? And the answer is I can create that life, that’s why it’s called life by design.

To quote Roland Byrd:

A Life by Design is a life that’s consciously shaped, a life where you decide where you’re going, who you want to be, and then you make it happen.

This really resonated for me. I believe we’re all in control of our lives. We all have the power to make choices that give meaning in our lives. The meaning we give things shapes us and our lives because it’s our personal reality. And our personal reality shapes the thoughts we have, the choices we make, and the actions we take. It is this that shapes our lives. And I know I’m the only one that can control this.

So, take control I did. I took pen to paper and started to get really tangible (and unemotional, which I’ll come back to). I got clear on what is was that I loved to do (personally & professionally) and then asked myself how I could be doing more of this whilst living my life by design. And this led me to the idea of starting my own consulting business.

I referenced making some decisions without emotions, this was important to me because I am a social being, I love the business I was working for and the people I was working with. However, when push came to shove I realised that I wanted to work differently and so making these decisions without the emotion involved was a really important component to making the right decision for me, my family and my passion for work.

So where am I now? Well, I’m officially launching Connected Experience.
