Part 1 of Handling a PR Crisis

I'm on a PR kick because 1) it's so important and 2) it's so neglected in #creditunion land. A PR crisis is a matter of when, not if, so here's how you begin to prepare, and tomorrow I'll share Part 2:

  • Establish a designated permanent response team and include subject matter experts as necessary.
  • Designate the PR incident management team leader, which should be your head of marketing or PR if you have one, or an outside service provider is often a better choice.
  • Determine the appropriate spokesperson. They should have media training or even be your PR person.
  • Gather all the facts from which you will develop talking points and draft statements.
