Parliament: UCID advocates for enhancing surveillance of Cape Verde’s maritime territory and establishing a fund to support shipowners.
The UCID (opposition) considered this Wednesday that there is a need to reinforce the inspection of the seas of Cape Verde and to create a fund that serves national shipowners to invest and improve their fishing and storage capacity.
This position was announced by the deputy of the Independent Democratic Cape Verdean Union (UCID), Zilda Oliveira, in anticipation of the first ordinary session of the National Assembly this March, which foresees a question to the Government ?about ?the fishing agreement with the European Union (EU) and foreign policy.
According to Zilda Oliveira, UCID “sees with good eyes” that the main counterparts of this agreement are for actions aimed at women and young people, with a view to reducing unemployment in these two segments of the population.?
However, he argued, he cannot fail to point out that the party has drawn attention to the need for financial counterparts to be used to respond to the sector's demands.
“From investments to increase local capture capacity, allowing supply to the canning industry and the consequent industrialization of the sector at a national level”, exemplified the same source.
Also, according to the national elected official, there is still some lack of knowledge of the agreement among many of those who work in this area.
Therefore, he considered that it is necessary to improve the socialization of this sector with workers in the sector, who have also been demanding more investment in the sector, in improving the fleet of ships, in infrastructures and in conservation, among others.
According to the deputy, the UCID will also question the Minister of Internal Administration, Paulo Rocha, in the session of questions from the deputies to the Government, about security and social peace in the country, which “has been a concern for many Cape Verdeans”.
“ Our questions will include the lack of human resources, material resources and mobility. The vehicle fleet, both in terms of quantity and quality, needs investment. We need to know the progress and assessment of the impact of some programs, and in relation to civil protection, the response capacity of institutions to respond in a crisis/emergency situation”, he explained.
The first session of the National Assembly in March begins on Wednesday, the 12th, and runs until Friday, the 14th, in Praia, and the agenda will include, among other points, a question to the Government about the fishing agreement with the European Union (EU) and foreign policy, questions from MPs to the Government and approval of projects and proposed laws.
