The Parisian Games: Epilogue

For sports fans all around the globe, the Summer of 24’ was an emotional rollercoaster, to say the least. We witnessed sports legends push the boundaries of human athleticism in their disciplines, countless controversies dominating global headlines, long overdue victories for many nations, soul-wrenching losses, moments with vigor and heart and so much more!

With so many polarizing conversations surrounding the event, let’s put a fresh perspective on why the Parisian games will go down in history as the pinnacle of athletic performance.

The Golden Struggle?

The long-standing rivalry between the USA and China came to an expected conclusion this year, the Summer Games ended in an unprecedented tie, with both nations claiming 40 gold medals each. This deadlock was sealed in the final moments as the U.S. women’s basketball team won a heart-stopping 67-66 win over France, leveling the gold count with their fierce competitor. Though the US won the overall medal count with 126 medals, beating China’s 96, the fierce rivalry between the two superpowers, already charged by their turbulent political history, took center stage on the world’s biggest sporting platform. As each nation fought for dominance, their athletes’ performances symbolized a broader, more complex struggle, where victory was shared, but the rivalry only deepened.

Throwing Hands and Javelins

In the boxing arena, a heated debate over gender eligibility in women's sports, centered on Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. Despite a clear-cut gold medal victory, Khelif's participation sparked intense controversy due to her disqualification from the 2023 World Boxing Championships over a gender eligibility test. Critics, including the Hungarian Boxing Association and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, questioned her inclusion, arguing it compromised fairness in women’s competitions. After an overwhelming surge of supporters globally, the event committee however defended Khelif, dismissing the criticism. Khelif’s journey, filled with scrutiny and accusations, was an inspiring one where undefiable athletic performance prevailed in the end.

The Javelin competition, on the other hand, saw the rise of a new gold-studded winner for Pakistan. Arshad Nadeem not only won gold beating former Indian sensation Neeraj Chopra for the top, but broke the previous record with an astounding 92.97m throw. Truly an astounding achievement for Pakistan as well as South Asian sports in general.

Close Call

Noah Lyles's victory in the men’s 100m final was another nail-biting finish. The race ended in a photo finish, with Lyles narrowly edging out Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson by just five-thousandths of a second, both clocking in at 9.79 seconds. However, Lyles also experienced a near miss of a different kind, he came agonizingly close to breaking Usain Bolt’s world record of 9.58 seconds, falling just short of that milestone. Along with his contagious energy, his triumph as the first American to win the 100m gold since Justin Gatlin in 2004, solidified his status as the "main character" of the event.

Legends Among Us

Simone Biles has become a living legend. She delivered a stunning performance at the 2024 Paris Olympics, further solidifying her place as one of the greatest gymnasts in history. Biles captured three gold medals, one in the team event, one in the all-around competition, and one in the vault, along with a silver in the floor exercise. These victories brought her total medal count to 11, making her the most decorated American gymnast of all time!

Biles’s achievements in Paris were particularly historic, to say the least. She became only the third woman to win gold in the all-around final twice and is the only gymnast to have done so in non-consecutive games. Her performances showcased not only her incredible skill but also her ability to maintain peak performance across multiple events, reinforcing her legacy as a global icon. With just two more golds, Biles is on the brink of tying the record for the most gold medals ever won by a gymnast, making her an athlete for the history books.
