As the Olympics approach, sustainability is a global concern. Paris is set to lead by example with initiatives aimed at reducing fuel consumption, increasing the use of renewable energy, and more.?
Today, we will delve into the measures being implemented and how they will help alleviate the environmental burden that could have otherwise caused significant harm.
?Organizers are committed to environmental responsibility, but achieving these goals involves overcoming several challenges.?
One of the primary challenges in hosting a green Olympics is balancing the massive scale of the event with the need to reduce environmental impact. Large-scale events typically generate significant carbon footprints, and achieving net-zero emissions requires meticulous planning and execution.?
As per the report, about 10,500 athletes will camp in Paris from July 26 to August 11. 15.3 million visitors are expected to attend the games; 1.9 million visitors will be from outside France; and about 8,500 spectators will take long-haul flights.
The following steps are being taken to reduce the carbon footprint:
- Renewable power from solar farms and wind farms will be used for energy.
- Diesel-powered generators will be minimized by using biofuels.
- 4680 square meters of solar panels are being installed at the Aquatics Center, and the seats are made of locally recycled plastic.
- Sports equipment and electronic equipment will all be rented.
Sustainable construction is a key focus for the Paris Olympics. The majority of the venues are existing structures or temporary installations, minimizing the need for new construction. The new facilities that are being built, such as the Olympic Village, are designed with green building standards in mind, utilizing eco-friendly materials, energy-efficient systems, and sustainable waste management practices. This approach not only reduces the immediate environmental impact but also ensures long-term benefits for the community.
To mitigate the carbon footprint due to transportation, the Paris 2024 Games will emphasize the use of public transportation, cycling, and walking for athletes, officials, and spectators. The city’s existing infrastructure, including an extensive public transit network, will be leveraged to reduce reliance on private vehicles. Additionally, the use of electric and low-emission vehicles will be promoted for necessary transport services.
Paris Agreement: Aligning with the Agreement’s goals, the Paris Olympics 2024 seeks to set a benchmark for climate action in large-scale events. By aiming for carbon neutrality, the Games will contribute to global efforts to limit temperature rise and mitigate climate change impacts. The strategies and innovations implemented in Paris are intended to serve as a model for future international events, demonstrating that sustainability and large-scale operations can coexist.
So these are the initiatives taken by the country towards a sustainable Olympics.?

Do you think similar kinds of steps should be taken for in-house national games, or have such steps already been taken up and many are not aware of them?
