Parenting Tips for Children with ADHD
Children with ADHD struggle with having both their left and right brain fighting against each other every day.?
While the left brain is telling them to sit still and stay calm, the right brain is fully activated and propels their nervous system to make noise and move around.?
Children with ADHD are expected to walk a straight line like the other kids but that isn’t how their brain is wired. This is important to understand for teachers and parents.?
When it comes to meeting the emotional needs of your child with ADHD, you will have to think outside of the box. Your top priority is to keep their self-confidence up and assure them that they are as amazing as you know they are.
Here are some helpful tips for managing the symptoms of ADHD:
Build a partnership with your child. Kids with ADHD don’t typically have a “go with the flow” type of personality so trying to control a situation would only result in frustration for you both. Instead, focus on creating a schedule and routine that makes them feel comfortable and less reactive. Build a routine together so you can minimize resistance during the day.?
Focus on positive reinforcement rather than correctness. Children with ADHD are in a constant state of heightened emotion. In order to level that emotion out, it helps to have strong connections with adults in their life. This can be teachers, family, friends, etc. Putting connection first has been shown to improve a child's emotional intelligence and mitigate negative reactions.?
