PARENTING STYLES: PROS and CONS

A Parenting style is an assemblage of parental jurisdiction and attitudes and a fervid atmosphere in which parents manifest their behaviors. Parenting styles encompass a degree of expectation, accomplishment demands for a child, and vigilance to the established rules within and without the family. Parenting styles impact the quality of life of the entire family.

There are four types of Parenting Styles; Permissive, Authoritative, Neglectful, and Authoritarian Parenting.

Authoritarian Parenting.

Authoritarian Parents are strict. They set up rules and regulations to be adhered to by the children. However, there is no disposition of an Authoritarian parent to neither talk through the rules nor welcome the observation and viewpoint of the child.?

Authoritarian parents believe in their parenting style. The children grow up well-equipped, all-rounded, adept, and become high-achievers.

PROS

Children are Objective

Parents are precise about exactly how a child should behave. The rules are pristine. The children develop an inclination to focus, giving their best on their undertakings.

Children are Responsible

Children conditioned to rules are scarcely under the impression of engaging in lawlessness. This habit of abiding by rules becomes part of their DNA, making them amenable citizens even into adulthood.?

Children Act Right?

Constant augmentation and scolding instill fear of retribution. The children fancy doing things the right way at all times.

CONS

Difficulty in Accepting Failure

Authoritarian parents believe that their children must get whatever they do correct. This belief puts the kids under pressure to perform correctly and accurately. Failure is not an option. The kids grow in the trepidation of failure. The children can not take a mistake as an opportunity to learn and ameliorate.?

Low-Self Esteem

Authoritarian parents seldom acknowledge and cherish the achievements of their son or daughter. Further, they constantly criticize the kids. These create an atmosphere of doubt concerning the son/daughter's prospects and value. The above contributes to low self-esteem.

?Display of Belligerent Behavior without the Home

Excessive regulation, physical chastising, and inclemency give birth to rebellious children. Savagery is the progenitor of intemperate behavior.

Permissive Parenting

Permissive parents do not set rules and regulations to be adhered to by the children. Moreover, Permissive parents do not take into consideration the presumption of controlling their kids. The parents are genial, supportive and responsive to their kid's needs, and affectionately supportive.?

Children bear reduced responsibilities on their shoulders and have the freedom to make choices and manage their exploits.

PROS

Creativity

Reduced rigidity, less control, and hardly any limitations create an environment where a kid can experiment with diverse hobbies and passions. The kids can easily exploit their congenital creativity.

Adventure

Unregulated freedom inspires kids to courageously and confidently take on new adventures with an exceptional sense of faith.

Assertive

Encouraging children to express themselves makes them develop admirable confidence. Ramifications notwithstanding, they become willing and prepared to risk trying new tasks. A child with a sense of self-worth is a product of unconditional love.?

CONS

Defiance

Children who are not controlled assume they can conduct themselves as they please. Whenever they meet resistance, they become rebellious.

Behavioral Impediment

Children raised by permissive parents are predisposed to despondency and apprehension. Children tend to keep their issues to themselves.?

Risk-prone temperament.?

Without proper boundaries, children fend for themselves. The children approach certain situations without fear, which increases their chances of engaging in risky behavior such as substance abuse.

Authoritative Parenting

Authoritative parents are encouraging, approachable, and educative. However, the parents put in place rigid boundaries for the kids. The parents reason, discourse, and expound upon the laid down rules.

Freedom and discipline tend to be in balance. Children are left to have a taste of the repercussions of their actions. Moreover, the kids are not intimidated but empowered.

Pros

Respect

Children who are allowed freedom by their parents feel respected, and they will show respect too. These children fare well with peers, seniors, and teachers. They equally flourish in social environments. Taking into account the feelings of a child proves that they are valued. The children grow in respect and appreciation of others.

Accountability

In his mind, an Authoritative parent believes that it is his solemn duty to make his son/daughter discern that he is solely responsible for his/her choices. This sense of responsibility empowers the child to make sound decisions. Moreover, these kids hardly give in to peer pressure. They learn vital skills which are crucial for their growth and development.?

Pliability

Authoritative parents give their children room for failure. Whenever children fail, they learn from their mistakes. Over time, the children develop the ability to conquer and snap back from the traumas and challenges of life. The kids become confident and better problem solvers. Further, they delight in accomplishments, and their self-worth becomes solid.

CONS

Authoritative parenting demands an intricate balance of freedom and discipline. Authoritative parenting is cumbersome and takes time to implement. A trial and error era is inevitable before a parent can figure out strategies suitable for the children. Rebellion is unavoidable.

Neglectful parenting

Parents provide only the basics of shelter, food, and clothing. There is little nurturing, discipline, and guidance. The children are left to grow and make decisions on their own.

Pros?

The children become hard-working at a tender age. They develop the traits of independence and self-reliance early. They mature faster and acquire sound decision-making techniques essential for their survival.?

Cons?

The children feel lost and confused if there is no proper adult guidance. Moreover, the children experience trauma and psychological imbalance. In adverse situations, children develop mental health problems.
