Do you ever feel like this?
Is technology causing chaos in your home?
Technology has improved the way we do so many things. From how we work, to how we communicate and also through to how we learn. But when it comes to our kids, technology can often seem like the enemy. The enemy that causes arguments, communication issues, lack of sleep and a lot of stress.
We all want to do the right thing when it comes to our kids and technology usage, but how do we know what the right thing is when there are so many opinions and advice out there!
As parents, one of the most important things we need to remember is technology is not the enemy. It will always be a part of our lives and our children's lives and offers so many opportunities and positives that were never available before. What can become the enemy - is when technology is out of control. And finding a way to create control through open communication and a shared understanding is where the solution really lies.
I'm a analyst on advisor on family digital literacy and my biggest tip to reduce digital family stress is to open communication channels between every member of the family about technology. If technology is a hidden or judged part of family life it leads to stress and arguments.
Try these 3 strategies today:
- Do something online with your child. Something fun. This will help to shift technology away from something that is a negative part of your relationship with your child.
- Identify the pain points in your family regarding technology. Write them down, talk to the family member they involve- hear their side, and make some decisions TOGETHER to resolve and improve the situation. This will help to stop the repetitive arguments.
- Inform yourself about technology and children's uses of it. Media headlines often focus on scare tactic, instead go to experts and trusted sources.
I've worked with many families to improve their digital family life. If you need more help, my website offers load of information I've written and presented on TV https://www.joanneorlando.com.au/ plus more specialised help for parents and children https://www.techclever.education/
