Parenting with Personality – October Edition

Hello, fellow parents!

By October, the school year is in full swing—the routines are in place, the activities are filling the calendar, and the excitement of a fresh start is settling into reality. If your days are anything like mine used to be, you’re probably feeling the weight of school responsibilities while trying to keep the calm. This month, I want to remind you that calm is something you can find within yourself—even when the school year feels overwhelming.

The Power of Calm (and What It Really Means)

We often hear that we need to “stay calm” in tough situations, but that doesn’t mean ignoring or pushing aside our feelings. True calm comes from acknowledging how we feel, managing those emotions, and working through them, so we can respond thoughtfully. It’s okay to feel frustrated, stressed, or overwhelmed—those emotions are valid. But when we pause, give ourselves space to process, and find our center, we create an environment where our kids can learn to do the same.

By embracing the full process of calming down, you’re not just keeping the peace—you’re showing your kids how to navigate their own emotions in a healthy way.

School Year Stress: Strategies for Finding Peace

With school in full swing, here are a few ways to help both you and your children find peace amidst the busyness:

  • Set Simple Routines: Consistent routines can create a sense of stability for everyone. Morning and bedtime routines can reduce stress and offer predictability, which kids thrive on.
  • Take It One Step at a Time: Break tasks into manageable chunks, both for yourself and your kids. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed, but focusing on one thing at a time brings calm.
  • Acknowledge Your Own Feelings: When things get tough, take a moment to check in with how you feel. Are you frustrated or anxious? Give yourself permission to feel that, then choose how you want to respond. Modeling this process shows your kids that emotions aren’t something to be feared, but something we can understand and move through.

Calm in a Pinch: The Breathing Break

When things get tense, take a 5-breath break. Pause what you’re doing, close your eyes, and focus on five slow, deep breaths. It’s a simple reset that helps you approach any situation with more clarity and patience.
