What my daughter has taught me about? Multi?tasking X?Single tasking
It took a while to actually start writing this? article?but I was inspired by a? text?written by a? really close?friend that I can proudly call "brother" (thanks Matheus), so here it goes…?
I'm a Father o f?an amazing 3y daughter called Julia and since she was born my world has been upside down. Let's start with the fact that she was born during Pandemic times?- meaning just my wife and I at the hospital on her birth, no friends or family visiting? or?helping in the first months (although we did had my mother in law at our home for the first week - so we were able to eat lol)?
Add to that the fact that I had recently changed? to a new company?and was still?onboarding and on top of that we've just moved to a new? home.??
Fast forward?two years? - it's?2023, my family and I have? been living? i n?a different country since 2021 (we live in Canada now - originally from Brazil), my wife started a whole new career and I've moved to a different company.? If the only constant is change, we live it by hard...?
Still I was sure? that?my ability to multitask was the main force pushing me forward…?Until the day I was alone with my daughter at home a while ago thinking I was having a quality time with her but of course , at the same time,? I was?holding my mobile and answering? work?emails - that was? the moment?when my daughter said to me in her few known words?"Daddy no celular, stay with me"?
That was when it it got to me.?No I was not good at multitasking, I wasn't? fully?present with my daughter and not 100% focus ed?on the emails from work. I wasn't properly delivering in none of them and got a real-time feedback from my daughter on it.?From that moment on ,?when I? a m?with my daughter I? am?with her,?"no celular ?allowed ".?

I decided to apply the at?same discipline for? work?- dedicated focused time into single tasks for a specific period of time . No phones, no Instagram, no slack, no emails or none of those distractions that keeps us all over the place, always busy but not accomplishing?much. Just dedicated work into the task ahead.?
Of course this kind of strategy forces me to plan my day ahead, make sure I have my priorities in order and time to execute them as well as time for messages, customer meetings, self development, etc…? Which is also known as discipline, which drives to consistency and later on to better working habits.?
Outcome was that I found myself accomplishing much more by single tasking than when I was "crushing" at multitasking.?
I'm sure I will learn much more by being a Parent and that Julia will always keep me honest and focused into my role in her life.?
And the same applies to my professional life, the learning process is endless, we just have to make the time and effort to go through it.?
Excited about what's to come next as a Father and as a Professional.?
