Parenting advice from Hope Rust – “don’t be a dick head”

It is really difficult to not write a newsletter about Raygun given the climate of current affairs in Australia right now, but I don’t want to draw more attention to the issue than they already is…

I do want to say one thing though:

If you have represented Australia at the Olympics and want to criticise Raygun for her break, dancing performance or the fact that breakdancing is in the Olympics in the first place, I might listen to you given your place authority. If you haven’t represented Australia at the Olympics though and you want to criticise an Australian athlete who is doing their best to represent a country…

Opinions are like arseholes – everybody has one.

Righto – now that I have that out of my system – here is my actual newsletter:

-------------

One of my favourite things about doing keynote speeches is chatting to the audience afterwards and shooting the breeze. After speaking to PassportCard on Thursday I was having a chat with Hope Rust (which is the greatest name in world history just quietly) who was telling me about how she does something pretty unique in today’s world with her boys over the dinner table…

Have actual conversations.

Hope asks her boys what’s the best thing they did that day, and if there was anything they regret doing and would like to take back – and her advice is usually the same every time – “don’t be a dick head.”

A lot of people make life harder than it needs to be these days, but Hope has it all worked out – have conversations with people and don’t be a dick head.

We are all busting a gut to do the best we can, so let’s not make life harder than it needs to be and just be good to each other.

If you have a different opinion on the Raygun situation, I am all ears – shoot me an email at [email protected].

I think the approach from Hope regarding conversation over dinner is awesome and is not as common as it used to be, which is sad. I know we do it, and I love it. Regarding Raygun, unless you can name another Olympian that scored absolute donuts for their performance, sorry Barns, but I cannot agree. Her lack of effort to excel in or even be reasonably good at the sport she was chosen (and I use that term lighly) to represent her country in was obvious. Her efforts were embarrassing and considering the years of blood sweat and tears our actual athletes have to endure to make the cut in their respective sports, she made a mockery of their commitment. We have amazing break dancers in Australia who would have represented our country with the pride that all our other athletes did, yet they were not considered or even given the opportunity to qualify. The Olympics are not the place to simply “give it a crack” (No offense to your give it a crack - which I love), they are the pinnacle of sport, the best of the best and that should never be watered down to accept mediocre like Raygun did. Sorry buddy, but she should never have been there and should be forced to repay all costs associated with her debacle performance.
