Ever heard of someone walking or talking in their sleep? That’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to parasomnias—a group of sleep disorders that cause unusual behaviors during sleep.
Parasomnias include a range of fascinating (and sometimes scary!) activities like sleepwalking, night terrors, sleep talking, and even sleep paralysis. These events happen while you're still asleep, often leaving you with little to no memory of them the next morning. It’s like your body is awake while your brain is still in dreamland!
But what causes parasomnias? They often stem from a disruption between different stages of sleep, where your brain has a hard time transitioning smoothly between wakefulness and deep sleep. Stress, poor sleep habits, and even certain medications can make parasomnias more likely to occur.
While some parasomnias, like sleep talking, are harmless (and even amusing!), others like sleepwalking can be risky, especially if you’re unaware of your surroundings.
How can you minimize parasomnias?
Parasomnias are strange but fascinating—and understanding them is the first step toward improving your sleep health. Ever had an unusual nighttime experience?
