What’s holding you back from success if you’re smart and hardworking?

Success is something that people seem to take a lot of interest in. Success women, politicians, companies and even stories. And yet there is one key thing that you will inadvertently hear about success. People are successful because they are smart and hardworking. These two words have been making the rounds of almost every success story.

Smart people are those who know an opportunity when they see it and use it to their advantage and then they struggle for years (or some) to make it a reality. Take Alibaba’s Jack Ma, for instance, or Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. But does it mean that only being smart and hardworking can guarantee success? As it turns out, there are more factors at play than just these two. There are a few more reasons why you’ve not yet tasted success. Let me elaborate on a few.

Your circle of acquaintances isn’t growing

It’s comfortable being in your shell with people you know and resonate with. As time passes by, your reluctance to break out and meet new people to form new connections, withers out. This is a big drawback. When you don’t meet new people, you aren’t exposed to new and fresh ideas.

If you’re in a fast-paced industry such as the media, you know how valuable contacts are. This network of your acquaintances will surely propel you in the work you do. However, you realize that when you form a deeper connection, it will enable you to think deeper.

Innovation is the key to coming up with something successful.

Change scares you

Following up on the previous notion that you’re averse to creating new connections, what could be the possible reason for it? One possible reason could be that you’re not the ones to adapt so quickly. You prefer the solace and comfort of the known over the uncertainty of the unknown. But it’s only when you can open yourself to change that you allow new ideas and thoughts to come to you. Confining yourselves to your known people, areas or fields closes off doors to things you could have achieved.

Risk is something you’d rather not take

Leading on to the third point is risk. Most of us run from the idea of risk. Risk means uncertainty. It means insecure bets. It means believing too much in your gut. These are areas that turn the stomachs of many people.

Most people tend to take the road most taken. You follow in the same careers as others have done, rarely attempting to break out. You prefer security. But if you take a close look at some of the people who’ve been successful in life, their success areas have nothing to do with their plans early in life or their college degrees.

You can stay in the safety of your job or you can break free and explore something nobody has done before. The choice is yours.

You rely on credentials

Those who’ve been at the top of their academic records or went to top-notch schools and got the best and most expensive degrees, tend to have an aura around them. They think that success should just come to them because they’re intelligent or because they hold degrees. But, most successful people don’t emerge out of these currencies.

You can have the ability and the degree, but if that doesn’t convert to results, it doesn’t matter. You need to be strategic about things as well. So don’t rely on your credentials to get you to the top.

Things excite you easily

One of the challenges we all have is to keep an eye out on what the future will be. Innovators have the burden of predicting what may happen. But when things keep changing, you can’t keep changing your goals. Your goalpost needs to be firm. Avoid chasing after every next bright idea and focus on what you believe in.

There will always be many options to choose from, but as someone who’s determined to achieve success, you need to focus on some or just one. You need to dedicate all your time to just one goal. It’s impossible to say that you will get success if you keep tipping your toe in everything. This isn’t possible even in our day-to-day life, let alone for those who want to achieve great heights.

One good way to do this is to test out a few areas that you like before you decide to take the final call. But once you’ve done that, all your time, energy and effort should go into it.

You lack belief in yourself

One common trait that’s been noticed among successful people is that they tend to criticize themselves more than others. They are hard on themselves. They have high expectations of themselves. This paranoia of perfectionism is a deterrent to growth. If you’ve taken the risk, the decision and the change, might as well go the whole hog and wait for the outcome. Even if you lack belief in yourself, look outward and see those who can see your progress from an outside perspective.

These are just some of the fears that are making you cling onto the past or the existing at hand. Imagine what could happen if you can identify which of these is holding you back. Once you can find the cause, you can work on the solution too.
