How Do I Measure Success?
When it comes to measuring success, our perspectives often evolve over time. In the past, my idea of success was achieving financial independence and accomplishing certain goals. However, my definition has shifted to focus more on being significant in the small moments of everyday life. It's about showing kindness, compassion, patience, faith, and loyalty to the people we come in contact with. In this blog, I want to explore the idea of success beyond external achievements and delve into the importance of personal growth and making a positive impact on others.
Redefining Success as Contribution
Measuring a successful day not by reaching some hypothetical level of success, but by reflecting on how I treated others has made a significant difference in my life. For me nowadays, success is not just about personal accomplishment, but rather about contributing to the greater good and making a difference in the world, one small moment at a time. It is in these small moments that I find true significance.
The Journey Matters
Organizational success shouldn't solely be measured by reaching the intended destination. It's equally important to reflect on how we treated each other and the relationships formed along the way. A successful organization is characterized by a positive and inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and respected. While achieving goals is important, the journey, relationships, and the overall experience are equally vital to true success.
The Illusion of External Success
I remember a time when I thought achieving all the metrics I had set for myself, particularly in terms of future business success, would bring fulfillment. I celebrated that moment during our company's Christmas party, where we recognized the number of employees and distributed profit share checks to everyone. I felt on top of the world during that time. However, it didn't take long for me to realize that it all felt hollow. I became acutely aware that I was emotionally alone, trapped in a prison of my own making. This moment was distinct, and it left me contemplating the true sources of fulfillment in life. I believe that many people hold the worldview that success will bring them happiness, connecting the idea of success to joy. However, the messaging by the media that promotes an idealized version of success can be overwhelming and difficult to navigate.

Embracing Presence and Purpose
I recently had an unexpected day of errands at multiple job sites filled with mundane but necessary questions. Despite feeling frustrated and exhausted, I made a deliberate decision to show up well for the people I interacted with throughout the day. When driving home with my wife, I unexpectedly found myself quiet, which is not something that happens often. Curious about my state of mind, she asked how I was doing. I replied that I was exhausted, but at the same time, I felt truly fulfilled. This sense of fulfillment summarized the day as a successful one for me under this new way of thinking. Though physically tiring, it was emotionally uplifting, and it set a positive tone for the day, knowing that I spent my time purposefully.
Balancing External Achievements and Personal Growth
While external accomplishments and success are important, it is equally crucial to have personal goals for self-development. Without personal growth, even the highest achievements can leave us feeling hollow and unfulfilled in the long run. True fulfillment lies in aligning our external successes with our personal growth trajectory.
Overcoming the Worldview of Success
Overcoming the traditional worldview of success in financial terms and finding fulfillment requires humility and a willingness to learn from mentors who have experienced similar journeys. They provide valuable insights and speak truth about the importance of seeking personal growth alongside external success goals.
In Conclusion...
As we explore the concept of success, it becomes clear that true fulfillment lies beyond external achievements. It is found by making a positive impact on others, fostering meaningful relationships, and embracing personal growth. The journey, both in personal and organizational contexts, matters just as much as reaching the intended destination. By redefining success and aligning our goals with personal growth, we can navigate through the illusions of the world's perspective and uncover the true sources of fulfillment in our lives.
