The Paradox Of Intervention And Control When Addressing Substance Use

The Paradox Of Intervention And Control When Addressing Substance Use

Helping—or just being controlling?

That's an important question families are presented with when learning how to support a loved one who is being treated for a substance use issue.

One of the biggest challenges treatment providers face is helping families navigate the boundaries of control when it comes to supporting their loved one's recovery.

Something I came up with when I created my RehabWorks Family Education Program is called The Paradox Of Intervention And Control. It's a surprisingly simple way to help families see:

  1. What's within their control
  2. What's not within their control
  3. What they can do—that's within their control—help their loved one move towards successful recovery

For example, if the client is an adult, the family can't force them into recovery. They have no control over that.

What they do have control over is what they do for their own recovery.

The paradox here is that the family doing what they need to do for their own recovery—ends up being the best thing they can be doing to help their loved one move towards the desired goal of successful recovery

This simple tool can be a game-changer in helping families understand the shift from focusing on the client to focusing on themselves, which is an important step in restoring healthy boundaries in the addictive family system.

And this is just one of the?3 exclusive tools?I'll be sharing in my upcoming webinar?Setting Boundaries In The Addictive Family System.
