The paradox of control you might be experiencing

Feeling like you’re doing everything yourself at work? Then it's time to reconsider your approach.

As senior professionals, entrepreneurs and business owners, it’s natural to try and maintain tight control over every aspect of our operations.

However, this approach can be counterproductive – hindering growth and innovation.

Psychologically, the desire for control stems from a fear of uncertainty. We cling to the familiar, believing that maintaining control will protect our success or an outcome.

It’s a similar feeling most of us have when we order the same tried and tested dish from our favourite restaurant or takeaway.

Despite having options, we go for the familiar choice, knowing it’s going to leave us satisfied. It fills us with a sense of control, even though we’re not cooking it ourselves!

Yet, paradoxically, it's often our refusal to relinquish control or try something new in life that holds us back.

Research in psychology reveals that excessive control can lead to decision fatigue, stifled creativity, and diminished productivity.

By micromanaging every detail, we limit the potential for collaboration and innovation within our teams.

The solution?

Understand the process first.

The power of letting go

Embracing a mindset of letting go doesn't mean abandoning responsibility.

Instead, it involves trusting others, delegating effectively and focusing on the bigger picture.

But before you outsource anything, it’s essential to get a clear understanding of your workflows and processes.

Write down the systems and processes you use, the workflows you follow, and any specifics that are unique to you.

Not only does this give you a clearer idea of what you can outsource, but it also provides a set procedure that you can pass to someone else, making it easier for them to complete tasks.

It’s also worth learning how to effectively communicate your outsourcing needs. A good outsourcing relationship is built on effective communication.

·?????? Give clear instructions and ensure the other person understands.

·?????? Encourage questions and provide clear deadlines for completion.

If you're hesitant to let go of tasks, that’s ok. Start by handing out a few tasks and ensure they're completed to your satisfaction before handing over more.

To keep the window of communication open, hold regular reviews with your team to make sure that both sides are happy with the tasks and level of dialogue.

Trust your outsourcers to do their work. You can always set a review meeting before the deadline for additional time to rectify things if necessary.

By relinquishing control and empowering others, you create space for collaboration, creativity, and growth not only in your business but in your personal life too.

Remember, letting go doesn't signify weakness. It's a strategic decision that can propel your business forward.
