The Paradox of Choices: When Desires Defy Destiny by Adnan Qaiser (A Sociological Reflection)

German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer (Feb 1788?– Sept 1860) had notably observed, “Man can do what he wills, but he cannot will what he wills.”

Human beings navigate their lives by making choices, whether consciously or subconsciously, based on two fundamental determinants:

1. Conscious Awareness – This encompasses acquired knowledge, accumulated wisdom, and observations filtered through the five senses. It represents the deliberate, rational, and empirical side of human decision-making.
2. Subconscious Influence – This realm consists of an individual’s intrinsic nature, core values, deep-seated beliefs, and the impressions left by past experiences. It operates beneath the surface of reason, often shaping choices in ways one may not fully comprehend.

Yet, the human condition is inherently constrained by finite perception, cognitive limitations, and existential imperfections. As a result, both these guiding forces—conscious and subconscious—are intrinsically inadequate, often leading to unintended consequences.

The choices we make, no matter how deliberate or instinctive, frequently manifest outcomes that diverge from our expectations, leaving us unsettled, perplexed, or even distressed.

This is why wisdom across ages has warned of the delicate nature of desires and supplications. One must be mindful of what they ask for, for the fulfillment of a wish or a prayer may unfold in unforeseen ways—ways that, in hindsight, may not align with one’s true well-being.

Fate, in its enigmatic course, often reveals that what was once ardently sought may not be what the soul truly needed.

That’s why Oscar Wilde had noted, “When the gods wish to punish us, they answer our prayers.”
