Paradise Lost in Retirement?

Paradise Lost in Retirement?

Have you ever planned and looked forward to a lengthy luxurious island vacation??One where you’ll be able to scuba dive or at least go snorkeling on a daily basis,?suntan near a beautiful pool, experience new restaurants, maybe play pickle ball or golf every afternoon and simply be able to take in all the sites?

To really enhance the experience, you’ve agreed to leave all electronics--pc, iPad and other devices at home.?You are only taking your phone in case of emergencies but have promised to lock it in your hotel room safe soon after arrival.?

Sound glorious, or…does it???

The idea of vacationing for an extended period of time raises the blood pressure of many—especially on an island where you cannot easily return to the mainland. This same fear is what some individuals face as they leave their professional careers and transition to the next phase of life -- “RETIREMENT”.?

More than 10,000 persons turn 65 each day, and many are finding themselves without much of a plan about how to spend their time or find community. Some people actually put more energy into planning a vacation than they do retirement, and these are the folks ones caught off guard when they realize “they can’t leave the island”. ?

If a person is in good health, research shows that retirement can last upwards of 30 years.?Not only do you need to be financially prepared for this journey, but you also must prepare emotionally, or you may find yourself sinking in an ocean of depression.

Please join Scott McLagan and me, Dr. Barbara Kreisman, as we provide a much sought after “Retirement Journeys; New Roads, New Horizons” non-credit course offered through the University of Denver’s Knoebel Institute of Healthy Aging (KIHA), Ritchie School of Engineering.?This course is for individuals considering retiring in the next few months or years, as well as for those who have already retired and may be floundering in the deep water due to an “abundance of time”.

The course will be offered on-line over zoom Tuesday evenings starting Aug. 2nd?from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. MST for five continuous weeks.?It will be repeated in November on Saturday mornings as an in-person workshop.?The price is on a sliding scale and scholarships are available.
