A paradise for Ghana and Africa

A paradise for Ghana and Africa

Can Africa Build its Own Prosperity?

The article "Riace: The Italian village abandoned by locals, adopted by migrants" on the BBC highlights a phenomenon: African migrants revitalizing a struggling European town. This raises a crucial question: why are Africans building communities elsewhere, instead of within Africa?

The situation in Riace, where African migrants have essentially repopulated a declining Italian village, is a stark example. In the future, as this community thrives, questions of ownership and contribution will inevitably arise. While it's difficult to fault migrants seeking better opportunities, the root cause lies in the challenges within Africa itself. Issues like economic hardship, conflict, and perceived injustice push people to leave.

Europe, despite its limited natural resources compared to Africa, has built prosperous societies that attract migrants. This prompts a critical question: why can't Africa achieve similar levels of development? While foreign investment exists in Africa, the perception is that it often leads to exploitation rather than sustainable growth.

The case of Fadi Daboussi, author of "59 years of Ghana to Nowhere: The future is Now," illustrates the frustration many feel. His book, critical of the Ghanaian government, led to his detention. This incident highlights concerns about freedom of expression and the pace of progress in Ghana and, by extension, other African nations.

The article argues that Africa needs a fundamental shift. It calls on leaders – political, traditional, and religious – to acknowledge past failures and prioritize the well-being of their citizens. Concerns are raised about the influence of international institutions like the IMF and World Bank, and the role of foreign investors. The core message is that African leaders must stop perpetuating neocolonialism and prioritize sustainable development.
