Why design? The top reason for choosing my degree, and why design will be bigger than ever
As the consumer market becomes flooded with an increasing variety of options due to the adoption of cheap mass manufacturing, inexpensive overseas labour, and the constant emergence of new startup companies, a significant shift has been observed since the 1900s. Back then, products were considered special simply for existing. Even if a product was functionally flawed and poorly designed, it could still succeed due to the lack of competition. Consumers were content as long as the product worked, even if it wasn't user-friendly, just because it got the job done. This trend is evident across macroeconomic generations and is particularly noticeable in the tech industry. Ten years ago, platforms like YouTube and Google Search lacked the polished and user-friendly designs they have today, mainly because they didn't face the intense competition they do now.
In the current competitive market, companies are forced to prioritize good design and user experience. This means hiring dedicated designers instead of solely relying on engineers to design products. The user experience of a product has become the decisive factor in whether customers choose one product over its competitors. Analyzing companies that currently prioritize good design and user experience reveals some of the highest-earning companies on the stock exchange. For instance, Apple, the world's largest tech company, has always placed a strong emphasis on good design, which has contributed to its place as the world's largest tech monopoly.

Looking ahead, I believe that design will become one of the most sought-after and essential professions in the late 2020s. Companies will place even more importance on user experience to remain competitive and offer the best services. I have considered this while choosing my career path, and hope to change the world positively with my designs in the future.
