Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea – February 25, 2025 – In a significant step toward strengthening diplomatic ties, Papua New Guinea has officially appointed His Excellency Sir Arnold Amet as the new Ambassador to the United States. The announcement was made during a commissioning ceremony held in Port Moresby, marking a fresh chapter in the nation’s relationship with the US.

The ceremony was attended by key figures including Secretary of the Department of Foreign Affairs, Elias Wohengu, senior management, staff, family, and friends of Sir Arnold, as well as members of the media. The position of Ambassador had been vacant for some time, and the appointment is seen as a pivotal move to enhance bilateral relations.

The Foreign Minister expressed gratitude for the collaboration between the two nations, noting that this appointment is a result of extensive discussions at the highest levels of government.

During his remarks, the Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of the new Ambassador’s role in fostering communication between Papua New Guinea and the United States, as well as with other nations, including China.

He acknowledged the significant achievements made in recent years, particularly the negotiation and signing of the PNG-US Defense Cooperation Agreement, a landmark agreement that aims to enhance security and economic prosperity.

The Foreign Minister underscored the importance of ongoing cooperation, stating, “We have a new relationship at the highest level for security, especially, and to ensure prosperity in the areas of trade and economics.” He expressed optimism about the future, despite global uncertainties, and called for unity in working towards the benefit of the Papua New Guinean people.

As Sir Arnold prepares for his new role in Washington, D.C., there is a collective anticipation for the positive impact his leadership will have on the diplomatic landscape between Papua New Guinea and the United States.
