Interns at the University of Maryland Institute for Health Computing (UM-IHC) play a significant role in the institute's work revolutionizing health care through high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. Six of UM-IHC's 17 interns worked with their mentors at the University of Maryland and the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), to develop and apply new advances in augmented reality and virtual reality to how medicine is practiced today and in the future. The Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) awarded University of Maryland researchers $2 million to develop quantum technologies that use brain-inspired computing and sensing. These UMD faculty members will collaborate with industry partners to better understand and recreate the brain’s unique capacity for learning and adapting quickly. They plan to use laboratory-based living neural systems to test and improve quantum sensors for a range of biomedical applications.
