5 Stages of Burnout & What to Do About It

Wouldn’t it be great if there was a lab test that we could take to see if we are “burned out”? Yeah, that would be nice. Instead, burnout creeps up on us and then basically hits us over the head with a host of mental, emotional and physical symptoms.

The reality is that these symptoms have been creeping for weeks, months, sometimes years before you realize that there is an issue. This is the main reason why burnout is insidious and sneaky.

Alright so what are the stages and what can you do about it. Well let’s dive in…

Stage 1: Honeymoon AKA everything is great!

  • job is great
  • accepting more responsibility
  • accomplishing tasks and goals
  • increased productivity
  • overall sense of accomplishment, growth, pride, etc.

Stage 2: Onset of Stress AKA And so it begins…

  • develop symptoms like anxiety, irritability, poor sleep, fatigue, headaches

Stage 3: Chronic Stress AKA Stress is My Shadow

  • social withdrawal
  • resentment
  • persistent fatigue, overwhelm, apathy
  • denial of problems

Stage 4: Burnout AKA Everything is on Fire!

  • physical symptoms: chronic headaches & GI problems
  • pessimistic outlook
  • neglecting personal needs
  • complete and total lack of caring
  • development of chronic illnesses

Stage 5: Chronic Burnout AKA Burnout is My Identity

  • have never gotten off the burnout train, no idea how to
  • chronic depression, sadness, etc.
  • development of chronic illnesses

Solutions:

  • regularly assess signs & symptoms to determine what stage you are in
  • intervene early instead of too late
  • determine life and professional priorities (things that matter to you)
  • set boundaries to ensure time and energy for priorities
  • experiment with different activities to determine what works best for you
  • there is no one-size-fits-all approach to burnout: every individual and burnout circumstance is different
  • partner with an expert who will walk the path of burnout with you to make lasting change to recover from burnout

Supplement Spotlight: Vitamin B Complex

Vitamin B complex consists primarily of a group of eight B vitamins, each with its own set of benefits.

  • Energy production: B vitamins play a crucial role in converting food into energy.
  • Supports nerve function: B vitamins, particularly B1 (thiamine), B6 (pyridoxine), and B12 (cobalamin), are essential for maintaining healthy nerve function and the synthesis of neurotransmitters
  • Promotes healthy skin, hair, and nails: Biotin (B7) and niacin (B3) are particularly beneficial for maintaining healthy skin, hair, and nails.
  • Supports red blood cell production: Vitamin B12 and folate (B9) are essential for the production of red blood cells.
  • Helps reduce the risk of birth defects: Adequate intake of folate (B9) is crucial during pregnancy to prevent neural tube defects and other birth defects in the developing fetus.
  • Supports cognitive function: B vitamins play a role in cognitive function and may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline as you age.
  • Promotes a healthy cardiovascular system: Several B vitamins, including B6, B12, and folate, help regulate homocysteine levels in the blood. Elevated homocysteine levels are associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
  • Supports digestive health: B vitamins are involved in the production of digestive enzymes and the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins.
  • May help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety: Some research suggests that certain B vitamins, such as folate, B6, and B12, may help alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety by supporting neurotransmitter synthesis and regulating mood-regulating hormones.
  • Supports immune function: Vitamin B6, B12, and folate are involved in the production and function of white blood cells, which are essential for a healthy immune system.
  • May help regulate hormone levels: B vitamins play a role in hormone synthesis and metabolism.
  • Supports healthy eyesight: Vitamin B2 (riboflavin) is important for maintaining healthy vision.
  • May help alleviate symptoms of PMS: Some research suggests that certain B vitamins, particularly B6, may help alleviate symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) by regulating neurotransmitter levels and hormone metabolism.
  • Supports liver function: B vitamins, particularly B2, B3, B6, and B12, play a role in liver function and detoxification processes.
  • May help reduce the risk of certain cancers: Some studies suggest that adequate intake of certain B vitamins, such as folate, may help reduce the risk of certain cancers, including colorectal cancer.

Perfection is an Illusion

As we wrap up this month's edition of the Panini Press, let me leave your with this mindset pearl: Perfection is an illusion.

It’s basically a mirage in the desert of high-performance and overwork.

Often we confuse growth with perfection.

Growth is healthy. It’s achievable. It’s a natural stage in life and in leadership.

Perfection is toxic. It is unachievable. It is costly and dangerous. It doesn’t exist.

Yet, so many continue to strive for perfection.

How about we start striving for excellence? For better? For growth?

How about we realize we are human and therefore have faults and will make errors?

By letting yourself be human you show those around you (including your team) that you are human. Thereby letting them be human too.

Life is too short for this constant, exhausting push towards something that doesn’t exist. So I say we strive everyday for better and leave perfection behind us, in the past!

Have a wonderful May and I’ll see you in June.

Best,

Katie
