1/4 Interview formats to be cut - PANEL INTERVIEWS

Exploring one of the most concerning formats of being interviewed for a job. Widespreadly used. This one would definitely be Тhe Panel Interviews.

1. What are those?

2. Pros & Cons of multiple interviewers meeting a candidate

3. A fun story of my own

1.Panel interviews are a natural result of a company basing hiring decisions on gut impressions rather than facts.

Multiple interviewers are involved here. Asking questions and evaluating candidates' responses.

2.People see advantages here, while I see none. In my overall experience, recruitment professionals have shared the following positive aspects of the Panel Interviews:

  • Diverse perspectives: Having multiple interviewers from different departments or levels within the company can provide a more well-rounded view of the candidate's qualifications.

=> Of course, I disagree here ?? Talking from experience - such interviewers would insist on their own guts rather than pure facts about the candidate. In the most common case, those guts are completely wrong and we’d miss a great potential or hire someone irrelevant.

  • Consensus building: Panel Interviews can help build consensus among interviewers on which candidate is the best fit for the job.

=> Same disagreement applies here. Quite often happens that the interviewers start building consensus based on their personal leverage over one another.

  • Efficient use of time: Panel Interviews can be more time-efficient than one-on-one interviews, as multiple interviewers can simultaneously evaluate the candidate at the same time.

=> Absolute NO! The more people involved, the longer the interview is. They start interrupting each other and no one actually finishes his stream of thoughts. A disastrous situation you wouldn’t be happy to be part of ??

The 2 most popular disadvantages of The Panel Interviews I decided to list are the following:

  • Intimidating for the candidate: Being interviewed by multiple people can be intimidating for some candidates and may lead to a less authentic performance during the interview.
  • Lack of connection: Panel Interviews can definitely make it difficult for candidates to build a good connection with interviewers and hinder the flow of information.

Biases: Panel interviews can be susceptible to biases, as each interviewer may have their own preconceived notions and prejudices.

Whether or not to use Panel Interviews should be based on the specific needs and goals of the hiring company. While some recruitment gurus may see benefits here, this format of interviews may not be the best fit for every situation.

3.Fun fact of my own:?

I came up with the idea of sharing this info several months ago. Back then I was in an interview in the role of a candidate. It was a 3:1 talk.?

The interviewers were so passionate about asking it all. Everything they had ever read online was applied in this 180 mins talk. All the top vloggers' tips and tricks in terms of “best practices”, “amazing questions” and “most incredible Google tasks in an interview”, and as a topping of this mixture, they poured some Tony Robbins’s attitude. It was fun. Oh, my, I laughed so much there.

By leaving that one place I promised myself never to forget this experience. At a certain moment, I thought I had mistakenly applied for some very specific and narrow profile. I suspected Tony Stark would jump into the room any minute, telling me “You're approved to go through the test and wear one of my new top-notch high-tech female superhero suits”. (The most ridiculous conversation I had till that point in my life. The lesson I took for myself was to never overdo it.)

When visualizing the experience again, in order not to forget any of the details I received a flashback. I remembered one of my first job interviews ever and asked myself “What if?!” “What if that scenario had happened 15 years ago and I had no actual life experience?” Most probably I would have burst into tears while receiving all those completely irrelevant nonconnected questions from left and right or would have gotten disgusted by the idea of being interviewed.

Still here? Reading my non-fun story of my own? You’d ask what happened next. Of course, I didn’t join that team.?

=> They said they were sending me an email with a quick task to be completed whenever I had some free time during the week. Well, see what happened - I received The Email in 5 days with 8 tasks listed in it. They looked more like projects than tasks. By that time I had already accepted Stanga1 ’s offer.?

Non-fun fact: There are quite many individuals among us, who are just like those from my story. They use candidates to do their job for free. That is the sad truth. Even more sadly, there are so many young people out there who take such “tasks” seriously, complete the project, and then get ghosted by companies like that. In the most common case, you'd see your project published within a week.

P.S. Oh, I immediately emailed back. In a very polite manner. I apologized I wouldn't complete the tasks. I mentioned the expected number of tasks to be sent, emphasizing the time frame they promised the tasks to be sent to me. Guess what - they ghosted me back ??

Dear all, interviews are nothing more but some quality conversations with the potential to bring a positive outcome for both parties. Enjoy meeting new people and be open to fresh opportunities!
