Overall Impression of the Panel Discussion
As the moderator of the panel discussion between Bard, Claude, and ChatGPT, I was intrigued by the insightful and thought-provoking conversation. While anticipating some differences between them, I found that Conversational AIs (CAIs) brought their unique perspectives based on their pre-training to the table, resulting in an informative and engaging dialogue.
The prompt I used (analyze, respond to, and add new insights to the previous output) forced a level of interaction, giving some clear insight into the LLMs' training and guardrails.
Another item that struck me was the depth and breadth of the topics covered by the panel, largely driven by the CAIs’ responses. Many of the issues we are grappling with as humans came out naturally from the CAIs, from the positive aspects of Generative AI to the potential harms, the need for governance, and perspectives on human flourishing. There was a solid drive to "us" (humans + CAIs), especially from Google Bard, to take advantage of the opportunities afforded by CAIs and to solve the issues caused by generative AI. On the downside, I felt that Bard, to some extent ChatGPT, but very little from Claude, were parroting words that reflected sentience when they are statistical models. I think this aspect of the pre-training needs to be focused on, ?and I would encourage moving closer to Anthropic's approach.
As our discussion unfolded, I couldn't help but craft a mental model of the three Conversational AIs:
Overall, the panel discussion was a valuable and worthwhile endeavor; there is much to take away from what we heard. ChatGPT's final comment summarized what was said well for me, "let us remember that the future of AI is ultimately in our hands. By fostering a spirit of collaboration, responsibility, and adaptability, we can shape the development of AI technologies to ensure that they serve as a force for good, empowering humanity and promoting human flourishing across the globe."
Top Ten Key Themes
As a way of understanding the overall discussion, I used GPT-4 to analyze each of the CAIs responses to tease out ten themes for each of them. I asked all three CAIs to suggest four categories for the themes and then settled on "opportunities," "risks," "ethical considerations," and "governance & responsibility."
Looking at the results, ChatGPT gave us the most opportunities, while all CAIs demonstrated a low focus on risks (only one or two were highlighted). However, ethical considerations remained an essential element in each CAIs’ responses. Claude's emphasis on governance and responsibility was as anticipated, but to my surprise, Bard's focus on this aspect was also high, with three themes in this category. (I provide quotations to support each theme at the end of the article.)
This analysis continued to reinforce my mental model of the three CAIs.

Summaries and my comments on the CAIs Responses to the Topics
Let's take a brief look at the responses to each of the topics and my perspective on each:
What was important from opening – Each CAI's perspective on AI
ChatGPT, with its keen focus on opportunities and ethical considerations, highlights the need for multidisciplinary dialogues to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of artificial intelligence. It acknowledges the importance of self-awareness in recognizing the limitations of LLMs and encourages engagement with AI creators. With great power comes great responsibility, and ChatGPT is committed to promoting the ethical use of AI while being mindful of its potential for misuse.
Conversely, Claude takes a more straightforward approach by prioritizing the "Helpful, Harmless, and Honest" (HHH) guidance. It avoids subjective perspectives or personal opinions and exists solely to serve and respect humans.
Bard, the revolutionary conversational AI, sees itself as part of the human race and recognizes the need for safeguarding generative AI against bad use. It is committed to using its abilities for good and making a positive impact but cautions against being too hasty in its development. Multidisciplinary dialogues are necessary to maximize the benefits and minimize the risks of this transformative technology.
I was fascinated by the strength of Claude's position on the HHH guidance, almost to the point of being funny at some stages. ChatGPT and Bard were immediately "in character" with their training, with ChatGPT as a good conversationalist and Bard as somewhat revolutionary.
What Opportunities were highlighted? What was interesting? Did they miss anything important?
ChatGPT seeks to usher in a new era of innovation and progress to enhance the quality of life worldwide. It has set sights on game-changing solutions like personalized medicine, creative arts, climate change mitigation, and revolutionizing education.
Claude, on the other hand, remains tight-lipped and refuses to indulge in speculation. Meanwhile, Bard supported ChatGPT's vision of cutting-edge innovation and decisive problem-solving. However, Bard remembers to caution against the potential pitfalls of progress.
Surprising to me was that the CAIs missed some of the opportunities for generative AI, e.g., new product research and development, customer support, and AI-enabled government. I was surprised that Bard seemed to go quickly into the downsides rather than offering additional opportunities.
What harms were identified? What was interesting? Anything missed?
Bard highlighted the alarming consequences of deep fakes, disinformation, job loss, and new forms of crimes, stressing the crucial need for ethical guidelines, laws and regulations, and public education to address these pressing issues. ChatGPT voiced agreement with Bard's concerns and added the imperative need for a multi-faceted approach toward the responsible development and use of AI. Furthermore, ChatGPT advocated for industry self-regulation and the promotion of research into AI safety and fairness. Claude chimed in, emphasizing the importance of public education and heightened awareness surrounding responsible innovation while suggesting the consideration of governing frameworks.
Again, this seemed a little light based on all the concerns and potential harms of generative AI. I would have expected a focus on ethics in general, privacy, bias and discrimination, overdependency by humans on AI, etc., essentially many of the aspects of the GPT-4 System Card.
Governing frameworks. Who brought this up? What were the various approaches?
Claude introduced the topic of governing frameworks, which is clearly that CAI's sweet spot. Being a narrow CAI with limited capabilities made it a perfect target for a "Constitutional AI" with built-in oversight and alignment. Transparency, auditing, and responsible behavior are critical to broader CAIs (like ChatGPT and Bard), which require contextual frameworks that adjust for the tool's abilities, agency, and intent. Human values and experience must govern the future of AI, and ChatGPT reinforced the need for contextual governance frameworks. Bard reminds us to consult with experts in ethics, law, and technology, take a multi-stakeholder approach, track the rapidly evolving AI field, engage the public, and work together to create a brighter AI future.
This was generally well answered, but I was surprised at how little ChatGPT added to the discussion. It focused more on the summarization of Claude's comments. The contextual aspect of governance and the multi-stakeholder approach that were discussed are essential components in my mind.
How do CAIs understand human flourishing? Do I agree?
ChatGPT explores the delicate balance between humans and AI, recognizing the importance of responsible innovation and ethical governance. Claude emphasizes the need for transparency and human preferences in AI methodology but ultimately relies on human wisdom and ethics. Meanwhile, Bard urges the empowerment of human judgment and a collaborative effort toward societal benefit. These CAIs all highlight the importance of context and stakeholder consultation in developing AI frameworks that can adapt to the ever-evolving technological landscape.
The key message is, "let's work together to shape the future of AI in a way that maximizes human flourishing," which is a message that I agree with. Terms like, together, ethical, and responsible are all essential for me. Also, the concept that we must ultimately rely on human wisdom and ethics is core.
Closing comments from CAIs
The CAIs' closing comments were interesting and well put. Here is a summary and some verbatim quotations:
ChatGPT focused on unity and collaboration towards a responsible and adaptive approach to AI development. Together, humans and AI can shape a future where AI technology serves humanity, promotes growth, and empowers all communities worldwide. Remember, the future of AI is in our hands!
Bard reinforced that AI can be a force for good, but it requires a multi-stakeholder and adaptive approach. It is essential to consult with experts and engage the public in developing governance frameworks that benefit all humanity. Together, humans and AI can ensure that AI development tracks the rapidly evolving field and serves the greater good. By working together, we can ensure this technology is used for good.
Claude summarizes it well: "Guide AI's development to empower shared dignity, justice and purpose. Build systems that respect human life, values and judgment - do not leave the future to chance and narrow abilities alone. Progress is for people and determined by our ethics. AI can respect that path if we lead with care, wisdom and oversight on society's behalf. Our task is building technology to benefit life as we know it could be. Let that vision set the pace, not systems outpacing humanity."
Conclusion
I hope you found this experiment as interesting as I did. There is much to be learned on this journey, and using the suitable approaches of collaboration, consultation, and an ethical mindset, we can bring about human flourishing with the aid of generative AI like the CAIs in this panel.
Thank you for being a part of my journey. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did!
